The temporary office of Guangzhou Shiling leather and leather industry research center was installed in an obscure little building. The director Zhou Li Chang and deputy director Zhou Nan were top students of famous universities. Zhou Nan told reporters that they were studying the overall development plan of Shiling leather leather industry, and contacted some high-end projects to settle in Shiling, such as R & D center, testing center and so on.

In 2000, Shiling Town began to develop the leather and leather industry as a whole, and invested in the construction of the country's largest wholesale market for leather and leather products, Shiling (International) leather leather city, pushing the Shiling leather industry to a new height.
In 2002, Shiling was officially awarded the "leather capital of China" by the China Light Industry Federation and the China Leather Association.
At present, Shiling Town has a complete industrial chain from raw material processing to leather manufacturing, leather goods trade and leather goods service, forming the largest leather and leather raw materials distribution base and leather goods production and sales base in the country.
There are more than 4300 enterprises engaged in leather and leather production in Shiling, more than 6200 raw and auxiliary materials shops, 250 thousand employees, and over 500 million leather products each year, with an annual output value exceeding 10 billion yuan. The products are exported to 25 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions, and Southeast Asia, Europe and the Americas. The share of products accounts for 60% of the Guangdong market, and more than 30% of the national market. In the middle and low leather luggage market in Europe, more than 50% products come from "Shiling manufacturing".
It is understood that Shiling more than 60% of leather enterprises have their own brands, "Bao Lan De", "Fei Gao", "Monalisa", "Tianbao" and a number of brands have been called the whole country.
Shiling leather products now have two Chinese famous brands; 10 enterprises are rated as Chinese leather and leather brand enterprises; in 2006, China's leather industry top 12, Shiling accounted for 3 of them.
But the flagship industrial cluster of China's leather industry is now facing the painful choice of industrial pfer and upgrading.

As a professional town dedicated to long-term goals, Shiling has long been planning for leather industry upgrading.
The development thought of "three leaps and three pitions" has been formulated.
The "Three Leaps" are: from product operation to brand management. (on the basis of building product brand and enterprise brand, we should focus on building the regional brand of Shiling leather goods), from product operation to capital operation (actively supporting enterprises listing), and from individual operation to alliance operation (including cooperation among enterprises and cooperation between Shiling and other leather products producing areas).
The three change is: pformation from industrial cluster to brand cluster; from industrial operation to regional operation; from economic lion to cultural lion.
In the heart of Shiling people, the future Shiling will be a "Oriental style town, fashion and creative capital" suitable for business, livable and suitable tourism.
However, reporters learned that the actual progress of industrial upgrading is not smooth.
First of all, most local businesses do not seize opportunities to pform growth patterns at the best time.
Shiling Town more than 60% of enterprises rely on exports, and formed a certain inertia, only a few enterprises with advanced consciousness dared to break the old business mode, began to brand development, and most enterprises did not want to break the existing profit model, which made many enterprises suffer in 2007.
Mr. Li, manager of a leather goods market, told reporters: "business has been very difficult recently, especially in the form of fewer and fewer foreign orders, which is that we dare not answer it. First, foreign investors are asking for a low price. They can not calculate their debts. The two is the appreciation of the renminbi.
Many local bosses feel the pressure from the market environment.
Huang Yaoxin, Secretary General of Shiling leather and leather goods business association, opened a single order for such difficulties: first, the appreciation of the renminbi, because the manufacturing enterprises in Shiling Town 60%~70% were mainly outside orders; the second place was the rise of raw and auxiliary materials prices, while the raw materials and auxiliary materials increased by 5% when the sales price of leather goods was not improved; finally, the cost of labor increased.
At present, Shiling has hired a worker, giving a salary of around 1200 yuan, raising 10%~20%.
Such difficulties are not confined to the manufacturing enterprises of the industrial chain terminals, but also spread to the entire industrial chain, whether the raw material suppliers or the traders in the middle, the gross profit margin of the whole industry has dropped from the previous 10% to the current 6%~8%.
It is no exaggeration to make a single claim.
It is not only the enterprises themselves that restrict the upgrading of leather industry in Shiling Town, but financial problems, environmental problems and land resources problems have brought great resistance to the development of leather industry in Shiling Town.

In Cui Jianjun's view, leather goods industry is not as labor-intensive as people usually think. Its innovation space is very large. It mainly includes three levels: engineering technology innovation, design art innovation and marketing innovation.
But if we follow the development thought of "three leaps and three pformations" and adhere to the innovative thinking and persist in sustainable development, we can draw the following conclusions: first, the local small and medium-sized enterprises in Shiling, which are mainly relying on material processing, will face large-scale pformation; the two is to introduce innovative and brand oriented headquarters of large enterprises to settle in Shiling to create suitable long-term development environment for these enterprises; three, it is difficult for the raw material market to meet the needs of industrial upgrading, and the construction of large and high-end finished products market; four is to rediscover the role of China's leather industry vane, and Shiling also needs to work hard in R & D centers, creative centers and headquarters economy.
The five is to face the general requirements of the airport economy in Huadu District. Shiling should further improve the quality of leather products, increase the added value of products and raise the level of environmental protection.
However, in order to successfully accomplish these tasks in the next 3~5 years, Shiling still has many difficulties to overcome. It also needs strong support from Huadu District and even Guangzhou. It needs the overall guidance of trade associations and needs cooperation from all sides.
