    Research Status Of Interaction Between Polymeric Tanning Agents And Skin Collagen

    Polymer tanning agents interact with skin collagen and reflect their own tanning effect, which is a very complex physical and chemical process.

    It is generally believed that the process is that polymer tanning agents infiltrate into the raw skins, and their active groups are combined with the active groups on the side chains of the collagenous collagen, or accumulate and precipitate between collagen fibers, which are wrapped on the surface of the fibers, forming cross-linking, adsorption or entanglement, or acting on the skin collagen fibers in other ways, thus reflecting tanning effect.

    As is known to all, polymer resins are characterized by the interaction of polymers at various levels. Their interaction modes and mechanisms are related not only to the chemical composition of polymer tanning agents, but also to their molecular weight, molecular morphology, and the arrangement of living groups.

    In fact, the latter is the fundamental reason for the unique tanning effect of polymer tanning agents.


    To study the interaction between polymeric tanning agents and skin collagen, we first need to understand the interaction between polymeric tanning agents and skin collagen in macromolecular size and supramolecular dimension.

    IR, DSC, X ray diffraction, electron microscopy and dynamic viscoelastic spectroscopy were used to study the interaction between acrylic acid resin tanning agent and skin collagen. It was pointed out that the large molecular weight components in the polymer tanning agent were filled with the fibers at all levels and above the supermolecular size of collagen, while a small amount of small molecular weight was infiltrated into the three spiral structure of collagen fibers.

    Later, Wei Deqing and others used gelatin as a model compound of raw hide collagen. The interaction between polymer tanning agent and gelatin was studied by precipitation method according to the precipitation amount of hetero symmetric substance.

    The results showed that the polymer tanning agent penetrated into collagen and formed a microenvironment between collagen fibers, whose main function was the side side side type Coulomb interaction.

    A small molecular weight polymer molecule penetrates into the collagen fiber and produces a Coulomb interaction with the collagen fibers; the other part is distributed between collagen fibers, and is deposited on the surface of the fiber by Coulomb force, and a part is filled between the collagen fiber and the fiber bundle, thus forming 3 layers: the inner layer, the middle wrapping layer and the outer filling layer.

    The intermediate wrapping layer is the main material of cross-linking. It connects the inner layer with the outer layer separated by the collagen fiber, and simultaneously expands the fiber bundles and appropriately disperss the fiber bundles.

    Pan Jinsheng and others found that polyacrylic acid resin tanning agent entered the gap between collagen fibers and bound with fibrous active matrix to form the wrapping film of fibers, thus improving the mechanical properties of collagen fibers.

    Li Xiaorui and others think that polyacrylic acid tanning agent can form cross-linked entanglement or adsorption network structure with collagen.

    On the one hand, the binding point of polymer and skin collagen decreases the external stress, and on the other hand, it can pfer stress, thus improving the tensile strength of skin collagen.

    Ma Jianzhong and others used [9] to study the effect of vinyl polymer tanning agent and skin collagen by various means. It was pointed out that multiple hydrogen bonding, electrovalence bonding, Coordination Crosslinking and network crosslinking were the main ways of vinyl polymers and collagen.


    The influence of molecular weight of polymer tanning agent on its interaction with skin collagen is very complicated. Up to now, no definite conclusion has been reached.
