According to Jiang Huquan, mayor of Hunchun, Hunchun has unique geographical advantages, located in the lower reaches of the Tumen River and the core area of Northeast Asia, where China, Korea and Russia are connected by land, and China, Korea, Russia, Korea and Japan are connected by waterways.

Hunchun's coal geological reserves amount to 12 billion tons, distributing second gold belts in the province and the largest tungsten mine in Asia, with a forest coverage rate of 85%.

The petroleum, natural gas, mineral and fishery resources in the Far East and North Korea adjacent to Hunchun are in good condition, and the prospects for introduction, development and utilization through economic and trade cooperation are very broad.

In 1992, 2000 and 2001, the State Council separately approved the establishment of the Hunchun border economic cooperation zone, the Hunchun export processing zone and the Hunchun Sino Russian trading area, making Hunchun the only region in China that integrates the three zones of the national level border economic cooperation zone, the export processing zone and the intercity Trading area.
