Ma Yun: Creating Jobs Is More Important Than Doing Charity.
Jack Ma American talk show host Charlie Rose Exclusive interview
Recently, Mr. Ma Yun, the chairman of the Alibaba board, has been interviewed by Charlie Ross (Charlie Rose) in the United States.
In the eyes of Ma Yun, the key factor for business success is not innovate Force itself, but the executor and propellant behind this ability -- enterprise employees. Ma Yun pointed out that entrepreneurs must stick to this concept and respect talents, while insisting on the best service.
The following is a memoir by Ma Yun and Charlie Ross:
Technology is not my business.
Ross: How did you throw yourself into science and technology?
Ma Yun: Well, up to now, technology is not my business.
I was determined to become a high school teacher and knew nothing about science and technology.
I can only send and receive e-mail on the Internet now.
Ross: can't you write a program?
Ma Yun: not at all. I have always wondered how those procedures work.
Because I don't know technology, I have a respect for technology. I hire the best technology people.
I believe that technology is born for people.
We need to tell people who are in technology: what people want and what consumers need.
I think eighty percent of the people in this world, like me, love technology but not technology.
Ross: How did you first establish Alibaba?
Ma: in 1995, I set up the first Internet Co in China.
At that time, I realized that the Internet would change the world and its potential was unlimited, so I went to learn business.
Ross: do you know that the Internet will change the world?
Ma Yun: Yes, but I didn't expect it to develop so rapidly in more than ten years.
At the beginning of our business, we were just a small company and had many difficulties.
Now that Alibaba is growing, we want to help more small and medium enterprises to help more entrepreneurs and employees.
We help them through the Internet, we help them, they will repay us, so that the company will become stronger and stronger.
Ali is the cornerstone of e-commerce.
Ross: what is the future direction of Alibaba?
Ma Yun: we will continue to focus on e-commerce, small and medium enterprises and consumers.
We hope to become the cornerstone of China's e-commerce.
In the field of electronic commerce, the United States has a very good business foundation, but China is extremely backward in this respect.
Ross: what is the core competitiveness of your company?
Ma Yun: of course culture. Technology is just a tool.
The number of employees in our company has increased from 18 to 2000.
We focus on culture, innovation, mutual support and mutual help, not just making money.
Unlike Wall Street, we ranked customers first, with second employees and shareholders at the end.
This is my belief.
Customers are the source of our wealth, employees promote innovation, and those who always shout for dividends are the fastest ones when the crisis comes.
In case of danger, employees will stay and customers will stay.
Ross: now that we have succeeded in China, can Alibaba succeed in other countries in the world?
Ma Yun: as long as other countries in the world have small and medium-sized enterprises, they can get the same results as in China.
I believe that in twenty-first Century, "small is beautiful".
We hope that one day, any small and medium-sized enterprises in the world will have a Alibaba.
I saw someone making a fortune by catching shrimps and not seeing people get rich by catching sharks or whale.
Agam said to us: shrimp is everywhere. You have to know how to catch it.
"Left eye dollar, right eye yen" can't make money.
Ross: you are rich and famous. What else do you want?
Ma Yun: the rest of my life will be devoted to encouraging and supporting entrepreneurs.
I want them to go back to school to recharge.
I intended to be a teacher, but I started business, and I did it for 15 years.
I think most of the things I learned in school are wrong.
Many business schools teach students how to make money and operate. But I want to tell people that if you want to start a company, you must first have values, that is, how to serve people and how to help people. This is the key.
We firmly believe that if you only have money in your eyes, look at the dollar in the left eye and the yen in the right eye, no one will be willing to make friends with you.
If everyone is looking at money, people will easily lose themselves.
We come to this world to enjoy and experience life, not just to make money.
Think about how to help people and create value for society, so money will come naturally.
That is why we can succeed in China and the core competitiveness of Alibaba.
Alibaba is doing business in this way. I think other companies should do so in twenty-first Century.
Ross: human is important?
Ma Yun: that's right.
China's largest resource is not coal, but 1 billion 300 million people.
If we can develop these people's intelligence well, it will bring unimaginable innovation.
I'm glad our company has many young people around 26 years old who will change the world.
I hate people following computers.
With the development of science and technology, in five hundred or six hundred years, the machine will become a killer of human beings.
Our task is to ensure that people control machines and let machines serve mankind.
Surpassing Microsoft and WAL-MART is Ali's mission.
Ross: do you always work or do you have time to relax?
Ma Yun: I cherish the present opportunity. If I had been living for decades, everything is impossible now, so I want to seize the time to do what I like.
We want to repay society and solve social problems.
Now, all things related to technological progress in the United States are happening in China.
Ross: will the United States continue to lead the world's technological revolution?
Ma Yun: in 10 years and 20 years, the United States will continue to lead, but the world is tilting towards China.
Ross: is it because of China's huge talent resources? Scientists, engineers and innovative talents?
Ma Yun: the United States also has many talents, mainly due to China's huge market demand, 1 billion 300 million people, and demand creation.
The market for the 1 billion 300 million is not just the Chinese market, but the global market, and the United States has begun to turn to the market.
But China also wants to learn from the United States: a passionate and innovative cultural system.
China still has a long way to go, catching up with technology is very easy, but cultivating an innovative cultural system is a big problem for China.
Ross: how many years will it take?
Ma Yun: at least twenty or thirty years.
Ross: you once said that if you can't become Microsoft or WAL-MART in China, you will regret it for life.
Ma Yun: we want to surpass Microsoft and WAL-MART, not because of the strong Alibaba, but because it is our mission.
The mission of this generation of entrepreneurs.
Job creation is more important than charity.
Ross: what do you think of the recent Buffett and Bill Gates's charity China trip? You are rich yourself, have you ever thought about giving away half of your wealth?
Ma Yun: This is a hot topic in China at present.
I never thought that money belongs to me now. It belongs to the society.
There are millions of people who are rich. There are tens of millions of capitalists. If you have hundreds of millions of dollars, that is social wealth.
This is not my money, a bed, three meals, I have that.
China now needs 200 million of the employment opportunities.
We have 1 billion 300 million people, urbanization expansion, and we are in urgent need of jobs.
I respect charity, but I think we should make better use of the money.
If I donate money now, I will regret it when I am old. I want to spend money now to create jobs instead of donating to charity.
