Sweden Imports NPE Textiles And Garments To The European Union

Sweden has notified the European Chemicals authority that it will compile a document on nonylphenol polyoxyethylene ether (NPE).

The document will be drafted by the Swedish chemical administration to list the EU's rationale for prohibiting the import of NPE textiles, which was submitted to the European Chemicals authority before August 2012.

Eventually, it will lead to a total ban on the sale of textiles containing NPE from the EU.

It is estimated that it will take only two years to incorporate the prohibition into the European chemicals registration, assessment and Licensing Regulation (REACH regulations).

NPE is a biodegradable surfactant and highly toxic to aquatic organisms.

The EU's restrictions on the use of NPE and exceptions are contained in Annex XVII of the REACH regulation.
