The main purpose of the project is to make marine fibers from seaweed, and then use these fibers to make all kinds of fabrics. The seaweed commonly used is kelp.

Quan Fengyu can explain that kelp can not directly make clothes, but rather extract marine fibers from sodium alginate. This material has already started industrial production, mainly used for food additives or cosmetics.

Then sodium alginate is dissolved in water and its interior is changed by technological process.

In the National Key Laboratory breeding base of Qiingdao University, the reporter saw a new milky white fiber material, which is not very different from cotton and other ordinary fibers, but feels very smooth.

What's the difference between this fiber and ordinary fiber like cotton and hemp? A student in the laboratory showed the reporter its ability - flame retardancy.

When the alcohol lamp was used to burn the fiber, it was found that it could not be ignited at all. In comparison, the cotton yarn and the general synthetic fiber were quickly placed. The fabric made of this kind of fiber was stronger than the ordinary fiber, and it was not easy to wear.

"This kind of clothing has no pollution, has the advantages of flame retardancy and electromagnetic radiation, and the production process is green."

Quan Fengyu said that many indoor fires are caused by poor flame retardancy of cotton, linen and other fibers. If marine fibers can be popularized, the probability of fire will be greatly reduced.

Therefore, marine fibers can later be used to make thermal underwear.

According to reports, the project started in 2005, and entered the pilot stage in 2008. The pilot plant can produce 50 tons per year. These fabrics are mainly used for the production of fire-fighting clothing.

"The next step is industrialized production. At present, we are preparing to build a factory with an annual output of 800 tons in Chengyang District, and we will make large-scale production after completion."
