It Is Controversial Whether The Minimum Wage In Pakistan Loom Industry Can Be Raised.

Bosses refused to raise the minimum monthly wage to 9000 rupees in Pakistan. They appealed to the government not to use electricity in the loom industry. Because of power failure, they could not start work four days a week.

Representatives of the power looms said they refused to raise the minimum wage at the meeting of the director of the Labour Bureau of Punjab and Malik, chairman of the minimum wage Committee.

In addition, all 50 other sectors of the province agreed to raise wages.

Mr Malik said that under the rules, the government could not allow any industry to raise the minimum wage.

The government announced a monthly wage increase of 1000 rupees. Premier Yusuf Raza Gillani announced that the monthly salary was fixed at 8000 rupees.

However, in order to gain political advantage in the upcoming general election, the Punjab government proposes to raise the minimum wage by 1000 rupees, which is fixed at 9000 rupees per month.

In Pakistan, the loom industry is mainly concentrated in four big cities, namely, Karachi, Kasul, Multan, and Multan, and three of them are in Punjab province.

It is estimated that there are more than 360000 power looms in these four cities, with at least three people working on each loom.
