In order to learn more about the differences between the two places, I made an exclusive interview with Mr. Zhang Da, the Shanghai designer, in Shanghai studio. Q: what do you think of the trend of the garment industry in the next three years?
A: the first big change I think is that some Chinese designers are starting to work for themselves and no longer work for the company, which is the most obvious change in the last five or six years. Because I didn't have much chance to work for myself, I was working for the company. But now, for example, in 2005 and 2006 in Shanghai, some designers began to design their own clothes and sell some products by themselves. Up to now, this trend is becoming more and more obvious. Both Shanghai and Beijing have this trend.
Q: how do we distinguish between Shanghai and Beijing?
A: in fact, their work habits and nature are almost the same. They are all very small in size and mainly in the designer, and most of the designers themselves invest money, but the investment is not very large, so the employment is very few, more like a form of studio, rather than a large scale of company. Such designers are available in Shanghai, Beijing, and Shanghai started relatively early in 2005 and 2006. Beijing probably started after the 2008 Olympic Games.
Q: what is the more attractive reason for Shanghai?
A: the reason why it was early was that there were small commercial streets in Shanghai. The rent was cheaper at that time, and could sell their own clothes, because only small shops could walk to shops, so designers at that time found some cheap stores by themselves, and then rented them to sell their own clothes. The reason for the late night in Beijing is that I think Beijing city planning road is very big and the road is very wide. It's all about driving around. Pedestrians are very difficult to walk. There are very few small commercial streets that can walk. So shops of that type are hard to find, so Beijing starts late. Moreover, traditionally speaking, southern clothing, such as Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang, and South Guangdong Shenzhen, will be better than the north. The foundation is better, and the processing and fabric are better than the north. So there is such an advantage. Many people in Beijing are working in this way.
Q: what is the difference between customers?
A: Shanghai is a typical middle class city, with a relatively large proportion of white-collar workers, so customers are also white-collar workers in offices. Some of them may be employees of advertising agencies, some of them are city magazines or editors. Most middle class income will be between six thousand or seven thousand yuan and twenty thousand or thirty thousand. Beijing also has such customers, but it will be more complicated, because the crowd in Beijing is more complicated than the Shanghai population. It has more people than Shanghai. This may be better than Shanghai because its population is more abundant. Shanghai may well be that these people are very stable in their work because they are white-collar workers and people who work very well.
Q: is the style of clothes the same?
A: Shanghai may prefer clothes to the west, a bit more conservative, but more fashionable. But Beijing wants to be more individualistic. This is a difference. Some people in Beijing are more daring to try something strange, though they may not be many, but they dare to try. So designers from Shanghai and Beijing hear different opinions.
Q: representing Shanghai is more successful. Clothing design Who are the teachers?
A: they may not be from Shanghai, but they work in Shanghai. Maybe Uma Wang is the most successful one. She is not from Shanghai but works in Shanghai. Wang Yiyang, whose business name is ZUGZUC, is very successful in business and in all respects, because he has a history of ten years, and his retail store has sixty companies in the country, and is also a very stable company.

Q: what about Beijing?
A: Beijing's independent little individual designer has not been so successful as Uma Wang. More likely reports in the media may be Zhou Xiangyu. He has just made his own show in London. But he is totally unclear about business, because Uma Wang has made good progress in business. Because more than a dozen foreigners sell her clothes, in Shanghai there is a shop of her own, in Beijing will also have a shop of their own. So she balanced the two aspects. This is the media report and her real situation.
Q: where do you find yourself in a big environment like this?
A: the first opportunity, I think the market is bigger because the country is bigger. This is a chance for everyone. Because so many people need clothes. In addition, the level of China's fashion industry is still relatively low, which means that there is more room for growth.
More importantly, customers begin to know what is good and what is bad. If they have the ability to make good things, they may also know that this is good. Through these ten years, some people will know how to dress and tell what kind of design is good. From the beginning of 2005 to the Olympic Games, because many media reports, many fashion designers set up shop to make their own products, and now it may be almost seven or eight years.
In large cities, some of the guests began to want to buy independent design products, because at present, the products of small designers like us will only be sold in Shanghai, Beijing, but not in other cities, but other cities are not without potential. This is a good opportunity for us. There are similar opportunities in Chengdu and Hangzhou.
Another favorable opportunity is that the rich in the mainland are tired of old brand names. For them, the novelty is over. They will find a new try.
