Xiangzi: making things is fashion , Conceptual nature The design products, who do, the rural women do. Who buys it? Artists, designers buy, Chinese buy, foreigners buy.
Commentary: the speaker is called. Zhang Hui Xiang We all call him Xiangzi. He sells the things made by rural women to artists and designers, which sounds unlikely, but this is what he is doing. Xiangzi opened a small shop in five Hutong hutongs. On this day, the reporters came to fame. The shop door's face was very low-key, but there was an orange and white brand on the wall, with an English name on it. The reporter entered the door and saw Xiangzi speaking English with a foreigner. Xiangzi was a returnee returning from Canada. He looked closely at Xiangzi's dress, wearing a black beret, with a pair of yellow side glasses and a large black shawl. His trousers were made of black and all kinds of dark green patterns, and then looked around the shop which had more than a dozen square meters. On the side of the wall hung a row of clothes made of spliced cloth. The colors of these spliced fabrics were either of the same color, or the different colors were bumping together. They looked really fashionable. They all came from the hands of a clever woman. I heard about it before the interview.
Xiangzi: the whole process of quilting is carried out in the leather Village of marigold Township, which is a concentric reciprocal peasant working community and the women workers who go there. They are the husband who comes to work in Beijing. These mothers are basically unable to work. Because we want to care about the children only, we build a cooperative with them, so that the women here have at least one income.
Commentary: using old clothes to make new fabrics saves resources and creates jobs for female workers left behind. The stitching data of these women workers who have been left behind need to go through a key link before coming to Xiangzi's shop. They are designed and made by professional designers, and designers include cloud Xi, a little known in the clothing design circle.
Xiangzi: These are the designs of Yun Xi.
Xiangzi, who was born in the northeast, lived in Canada for ten years and knew what he wanted to do in Beijing. He had confidence in his shop.
Xiangzi: we went to India to make a project. We made quilt quilts, and friends put in the money. We made disabled women and rural women to India children, especially poor people. Because their children in India do not cut the umbilical cord, they need to wait for the placenta to come out to cut the umbilical cord. At that time, the family was poor even with a cloth bag. So what we did was to wrap the child with a little cloth and quilt, which could earn a small sum of money for the disabled women in China, but the poor children in India could also get help from public welfare.
Commentary: what Xiangzi did after he returned to China was quite different from his life abroad. Before returning to China, Xiangzi was a project manager of a telecommunications company in Canada. He lived in a stable life. In his words, he could live in his old age. Why did Xiangzi give up in Canada and go home with his wife and two daughters, and open a small shop in the old alley of Beijing.
Xiangzi: when people reach a certain stage, they may have a kind of introspection. They have lived abroad for ten years, where they can spend their old age comfortably. But I feel that I have to do something interesting. For me, this interesting concept is to do things with different people, but different people I may be concerned about, especially vulnerable women groups.
Reporter: How did you gradually turn your attention to these rural women?
Xiangzi: my wife is a scholar in China, studying women's literature. She contacted Wu Qing's teacher and Wu Qing's skill training center, which was specially trained in poverty-stricken areas in China to give poor women a week or two weeks of training in her school in Beijing. She has more than 70 of the elderly. She has been spreading this concept. I think more than 70 year old people can go to full-time jobs to do this. I say we should do something fun.
Commentary: funny thing, what is the concept of fun in Xiangzi's dictionary?
Xiangzi: I want to do one thing, a project can combine my thoughts, help, design, and other cross-border things. Even transnational and cross-cultural, I feel this is a very interesting and interesting thing for me, so I am trying to do it all the time.
Commentary: with enthusiasm and determination to return home, Xiangzi began to practice his own ideas, but the customers did not buy his enthusiasm. In the interview, Xiangzi said he had a story behind every item in his shop, but now he is not very willing to tell these stories.
Xiangzi: we sell products with stories behind them. Later, I didn't want to publicize the story. I wanted to sell this story, feeling that it was pressing people to buy things and not doing it for a long time, so we had to make products well, and I wanted to talk about products, not those who were behind stories, who were poor, who were poor, and those who did not like it would not buy it.
Reporter: you feel these two pairs of earrings are beautiful, aren't they?
Customer: Yes, I bought earrings, and I didn't buy his story.
Commentary: in order to continue to practice their own ideas, so that small businesses can continue to operate, Xiangzi must change his mind. After all, since the opening of small stores in July 2009, Xiangzi did not earn enough money to pay for the first three years, which is a little pressure for a middle-aged father with two children. In the past three years, his wife has been supporting his career. Xiangzi said that the most important goal this year is to make profits. He has set a good goal. He will earn a car for the salesperson Wang Qi and himself.
Xiangzi: attention to the rural vulnerable women, the theme has not changed at all, but we must make this project sustainable. We must have income if we say continuity. Otherwise, if the staff is gone, the shop will not be able to open up, right? There is a slogan. We want to earn a QQ for Wang Qi. I can buy a bike myself.
Reporter: Yun Xi How much does she have to sell if she puts it in another store?
Xiangzi: she makes a winter coat probably in five thousand to seven thousand or so, now in a famous international design shop.
Commentary: after the design of the brand designer, the fabric made by the left behind women workers has increased in value. The clothes made of these fabrics are also the most satisfactory works of Xiangzi in the small shop. Let's not see Xiangzi's shop is only a dozen square meters. There is an old saying that the mountain is not high and immortal. Xiangzi, relying on this small shop, did a lot of things, such as helping to donate a bookstore specially designed for rural women in the suburbs of Beijing, while the donor was the mother of a group of pupils far away in England.
Xiangzi: the rural bookstore is what we did in the suburbs of Beijing some time ago. What do you say about poverty? It's not so poor. Do you think women can read books and there are no books at home. At that time, I built a certain restriction on the cooperative, because it was the money donated by the mothers of the children in the British private primary schools, so the book society had to let the mothers of these children have the ability to visit the book club, so we chose the one near Beijing, one on Sima's desk, and the other on the other side of Huairou.
Reporter: How did you find the mother of a private primary school in England to donate money?
Xiangzi: they found me. They believed me and said I knew how to make the money more meaningful.
Commentary: Xiangzi said he was like a matchmaker. He also used quilt quilts made by women left behind workers to be sent to babies from some poor families in India.
