The Safety Of Functional Textiles At This Stage

    2012/8/22 14:52:00 53

Since the 90s of last century, functional

    textile

The development of China's textile industry has shown a continuous upsurge in the Chinese market, and has formed a functional textile industry pattern with a certain scale, relatively complete varieties, perfect functions and relatively stable development.

At present, the biggest problem in the development of functional textiles is the lack of functional evaluation methods and evaluation criteria.

In recent years, although scientific research institutes, standardization organizations and related enterprises have carried out research work in this field, and achieved some results, the standardization of some functional evaluation methods has been realized.

But in general, most functional textiles are still unable to be recognized by authoritative inspection institutions, making the consumption of functional textiles too blind and effective supervision, which is obviously unfavorable to the healthy development of the functional textile industry.

Another problem that has been neglected is the safety of functional textiles.

As we all know, some special functions of functional textiles are mainly through

    fibre

Some special functional chemicals are added to or added to the product.

However, a considerable part of these chemicals used in functional textiles have not been subjected to strict safety assessment, especially after long term follow-up analysis.

In fact, some functional additives which have been widely used before have been harmful to the human body or the environment, and have been banned.

Therefore, from the point of view of consumer safety and environmental protection, it is extremely important to establish an effective safety assessment specification, which can provide a guarantee for the healthy development of functional textiles.

Take flame retardant textiles as an example.

According to statistics, over 20% of the world's fire accidents are caused or expanded by the burning of textiles, especially in residential fires. The proportion of fire accidents caused by the fire or spread of textiles is even greater.

According to statistics from the Fire Department of the Ministry of public security, there were 132 thousand fires in 2010, including 1108 deaths, 573 injuries and 1 billion 770 million yuan of direct property losses.

Especially in 2010, the "11.15" Jiaozhou road fire accident in Shanghai caused 58 deaths and nearly a hundred people seriously injured, making the flame-retardant textiles again become a hot topic of public concern.

Therefore, the flame retardant function has become one of the necessary functions of interior decoration and textiles for public places.

The flame retardant function of textiles can be generally obtained by flame retardant finishing. The elements with flame retardancy are: boron and aluminum of group A, as inorganic compounds used as non durable flame retardant for cotton fabrics; B and titanium B and V B family niobium; their compounds are used in wool fabrics; and V, P, Sb and VII A family halogen are also the main elements in flame retardants, of which nitrogen and phosphorus are used in cellulose fibers, halogens and stibium are used in synthetic fibers and durable flame retardants.

The first banned flame retardant is three (nitrogen heterocyclic propyl) phosphorus oxide, itself highly toxic, LD50=37 ~ 46mg/kg, and carcinogenicity.

In 1997, the American Cancer Institute found that three (2,3- dibromo propyl) phosphate was carcinogenic and highly toxic, and its LD50=50mg/kg was banned.

The European Union's prohibition against flame retardants is based on the European Union dangerous goods and related amendments, including 79/663/EEC, 83/264/EEC and 2003/11/EC3 regulations. All these are flame retardants for textiles directly contacting the human body.

However, the hazards of flame retardants are not so clear. For example, four bromo bisphenol A series of flame retardants, in April 2008, the National Institutes of Health published a report on the harm of bisphenol A to human health. The Canadian Ministry of health and the Ministry of environmental protection also issued a statement on the management of bisphenol A. However, in June 2008, the European Commission issued a risk assessment report on bisphenol A, declaring that consumers could safely use the packaging boxes containing bisphenol A in direct contact with food.

It can be seen that the safety of functional finishing agents is sometimes implicit, and is not very intuitive.

Take radiation protection textiles as an example.

In 2011, the Japanese "3.11" earthquake caused the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant accident to raise the word "radiation" to a hot topic. Once in a while, the white dress became fashionable color.

In fact, with the rapid development of radio, television, telecommunications and power utilities, the whole biological community has long been immersed in electromagnetic radiation, and electromagnetic radiation has become the fourth source of pollution after air pollution, water pollution and noise pollution.

After being exposed to electromagnetic radiation, the body will not only heat the skin, but also heat up the deep tissue, which is conducive to the growth of cancer cells. Therefore, exposed to electromagnetic radiation for a long time, the body will be damaged to varying degrees, especially for pregnant women who are in the sensitive period and low resistance period.

Therefore, radiation resistant textiles have become an essential protective tool for women of childbearing age. But at present, there are hundreds of enterprises specializing in the production of maternity dress in China, and most of them are small and medium-sized enterprises, and many of them are family workshops. Their low technical content and quality of products are difficult to guarantee, resulting in the phenomenon of blindly exaggerating the efficiency of products in order to deceive consumers.

    Radiation protection

    Maternity Dress

Whether it can really play the role of radiation protection, and even whether it will cause other hazards to the body, is hard to conclude at the moment.

Some production enterprises use the materials containing heavy metals such as mercury, lead, nickel and chromium to make radiation proof maternity dress. They also have the effect of radiation protection, but the harm caused by heavy metals to pregnant women and fetus is immeasurable.

It can be seen that in the development process of functional textiles, in addition to testing whether there is a certain function, it is necessary to supervise the safety of its use.
