    Dow Gets Permission To Use Bayer Polyether Polyol Impact Technology

    Leverkusen Bayer to Dow Chemical sales license, allowing Dow to use its impact patented technology to produce polyether polyols.

    The two sides did not disclose financial details of technology pfer.

    Bayer claims that this technology includes an advanced process of polyalkoxylation reaction using bimetallic cyanide as catalyst.

    The agreement also allows Dow to produce long-chain polyether polyols by continuous process process, which is the basic product for producing elastic polyurethane block.

    Dow disclosed that the world class device was evaluated based on the technology, and the plant is scheduled to be put into operation in 2010.

    But Dow plans to launch some pre sale products before that.

    Bayer is very enthusiastic about this technology.

    At the meeting held in dormagen earlier this year, patrickthomas, President of Bayer Material Technology, revealed that Shell and BASF also used impact technology to supply long chain polyether polyol blocks to the market.

    At the meeting, Thomas also emphasized the intention to pfer the technology.

    The impact catalytic process uses a new catalyst which is about 1000 times more active than the KOH catalyst. "Converting the original multi-step and half batch feeding process into a continuous production process" obviously reduces the complexity of the process.

    Thomas declared: "we not only increased the output of 6 times the reaction, that is, the output, but also reduced the cost of the entire process pformation."

    Bayer Material Technology in 2006 polyether polyols production capacity of 1 million 150 thousand tons, accounting for 23% of the world's total capacity.
