Bangladesh Garment Workers Pay Malaysia Salary Increase Next Year
The minimum wage review team appointed by the government set a new salary level in early November. The minimum wage was adjusted from the current 3000 Dhaka (about 38.58 US dollars) to 5300 Dhaka (about 68.17 US dollars).
According to the proposal, 3200 Dhaka (about $41.16) was fixed to basic wages, with an increase of 1280 Dhaka (about 16.46 US dollars) as rent, medical and transportation allowances of 320 Dhaka (about 4.11 US dollars) and 200 Dhaka (about 2.57 US dollars), with food added to 300 Dhaka (about 3.86 dollars).
The chairman of the group, AK Roy, told reporters after the meeting that the minimum wage was finally voted by the members present because there was no consensus on this issue.
He added that four delegates voted for the 5300 monthly wage proposal in Dhaka, but two representatives of factory owners avoided voting. The final proposal will now be submitted to the Ministry of labor and employment for approval. Once completed, the new wage structure will take effect from November 1st.
