Portugal'S Textile And Clothing Exports Decline

According to Portuguese official statistics released recently, affected by the financial crisis, especially the demand of importing countries is shrinking, Portuguese textile and garment exports have declined.

In the first 8 months of this year, Portuguese textile and garment export revenues were 2 billion 700 million euros, down 170 million euros from the same period last year, down 5.9% from the same period last year.

Statistics show that this year, due to the impact of the financial crisis, Portugal's major textile and garment export market demand slowed down significantly, compared with the same period last year, foreign orders fell by 20% this year.

A large number of Portuguese textile enterprises were forced to cut production or stop production because of the decline in exports, and a large number of workers were dismissed.

Textile and garment industry is a traditional Portuguese industry and an important export industry.

There are about 4000 textile and garment enterprises in the country, mostly in the northern part of the country, with a population of 180 thousand.

In the first half of this year, Portuguese textile and garment exports accounted for 12% of Portugal's total exports, and Europe was Portugal's largest export market for textiles and clothing.
