Vietnam Formulating Quality And Safety Standards For Leather And Footwear Products

The aim is to provide producers with a basis for producing more quality products and create a fair competition environment for domestic and foreign distributors.

< p > Vietnam leather and footwear association secretary general Phan Thi Thanh Xuan reported to industrial trade that although Vietnam's leather and footwear industries still rely heavily on imports of raw materials, there has been no set of standards to control the use of dangerous chemicals.

According to the Vietnam leather and Footwear Association, the industry produces 22 to 250 thousand metric tons of leather annually, of which 100 thousand metric tons come from domestic manufacturers.

Only a few testing centers in Vietnam can be used for leather and footwear manufacturers to inspect imported raw materials. As a result, some footwear enterprises have to check the quality of raw materials and products to meet the requirements of the buyers.

Nguyen Bich Thuy, a representative of Thuong Dinh shoemaking Co., Ltd., said that they usually send their samples abroad for inspection before the production of bulk orders. If the test results dissatisfied the customers, the company will replace the new raw materials.

However, the leather and footwear products imported by Vietnam will not be faced with such problems. Nguyen Dinh Hiep, head of the Ministry of science and technology development of Vietnam's Ministry of industry and trade, said that most of the leather and footwear enterprises in Vietnam were contracted to foreign-funded enterprises, so the products produced should meet the requirements of international standards.

He also stressed that it is necessary for Vietnam to implement a set of quality inspection standards or technical barriers to trade so as to better control imported goods and raw materials.
