Enter The Western Workplace: Do You Have Global Thinking?
Mr. Huang Jianping, the founder, honorary chairman and chief strategist of Beijing Jianping international investment company, is one of the first respondents.
He proposed the use of a global competency scale to describe the progress of a person from Chinese professionals to global professionals.
Although we did not try to scientifically and systematize this theory, the simplicity of the scale made it very practical in our further discussion.
The following is Dr. Huang's view:
"It takes at least two stages for a Chinese professional to succeed on a global scale.
If we use a scale of 1-10, reaching the 6 level is relatively easy. It involves understanding the basic language, customs and basic laws of the other country.
But beyond the 6 level and reaching the second stage, it is difficult to achieve because it is very delicate.
From level 1 to level 6, professionals only need to complete a series of small steps.
These are usually easy for Chinese professionals, because they involve memory and pure technical know-how, and most Chinese who are proficient in English can achieve it in a few months.
But the development from 6 to 10 is a great leap forward, which is the most frequently lost place for Chinese professionals.
Although Dr. Huang's model is conceptual and has no specific description of all levels, if so, they may be like this:
The relative model of success in western environment
The 1 level is ignorant of foreign business practices and hardly any foreign language.
The 2 level is a basic understanding of the business practices of the other countries, and a limited command of English or the language of the country.
Level 3 - a moderate understanding of a country's or many countries' business practices and a moderate mastery of English.
Level 4 - a moderate degree of understanding of a country's or many countries' business practices and proficiency in everyday English or the other's national language.
Level 5 - a thorough understanding of the customs and business practices of the other countries and a general understanding of business practices in western countries.
Proficiency in English or language.
Have important experience in working with foreigners.
6 level - 5 level plus foreign life experience.
To successfully communicate in English or in the language of the country, it includes not only interpersonal discussions, but also the presentation of speeches in English or other foreign languages.
7 level - 6 level plus the desire to make use of cultural differences between China and foreign countries.
The ability to make extensive use of communication skills in English or the other's national language includes the ability to exert influence and persuasion based on the results rather than on the individual's position in the corporate hierarchy.
8 level - 7 level plus rich foreign life experience.
We can do well in discussing and explaining enterprise vision with customers, analysts and employees.
Began to develop a "global thinking" that is different from Chinese thinking in terms of business and culture.
9 level - 8 level plus foreign values and beliefs.
Idea
Good grasp.
Compared with Chinese thinking, it is more global.
Way of thinking
。
The 10 level is the same global thinking of thinking and action as foreign natives.
For some Chinese professionals, it may not be possible to surpass the 6 level.
For example, some people represent Chinese companies as Chinese representatives in Sino foreign joint ventures. Some of them are still loyal to Chinese founders. If they want to use such loyalty on foreign investors, they may never feel at ease.
Under such circumstances, Chinese professionals are unlikely to have "less".
Chinese thinking
This will is a necessary condition for developing global thinking.
For those who want to become global professionals, he (or she) has to ask the question: can you really give up loyalty to a country and switch yourself to global thinking? This does not mean that Chinese professionals can no longer love their motherland, and patriotism is always a good thing.
But real global professionals must be able to represent their companies in the global environment. It is no longer enough to represent China alone internationally.
