7 Ways To Deal With Work For Successful People
Vander Cam also wrote "168 hours" (168 Hours) to teach you how to make the most of your time.
Over the years, she has asked hundreds of people to record how they spend their days.
Her analysis of these time logs provided material for her work, and in her latest research, how successful people work, she summed up the 7 common habits of outstanding people in various fields when they finished their work.
Although one of them is the most important, it is also the most time-consuming to finish - you will soon understand.
Here are seven common points she finds.
1. pay attention to your time.
If you want your work time to be new, you must know how long your activities will take.
One of the most prolific children's book illustrators interviewed in this e-book can accurately predict how long it will take to draw a picture (in fact, it is based on how many times the comedy "Song Fei" is reproduced in the background before it completes the painting).
She then used this to set goals for a specific period of time, that is, to complete three illustrations a day.
In order to have a similar understanding of your work or productivity, Van de cook suggested that you keep a diary for a whole week, so you can clearly know what the weekend is doing - people tend to pay less attention to what they do on weekends.
There are more than one way to track time, so choose only those that are valid for you.
As Vander Cam said on the telephone in his home outside Philadelphia, "the goal is to help, not to make you hate your life."
For example, Van de cam has updated two time logs daily.
Others may want to make more frequent updates through computers or smart phone apps.
No matter what your choice is, make the record convenient and quick. It will also track down what you have been doing.
"Whether you consciously choose how to use that time, time will pass."
Vander Cam said, "it is also a choice if you don't pay attention to how you use it.
I can't tell you how many people will say to me in second days: I have been tired of tenth times, and wrote in the record, "Facebook', so I no longer record."
2. plan.
The second step to pay more attention to your work time is to plan your time.
This seems very obvious, but many of the employees who are constantly harassed find themselves in the first aid classification mode. They can only respond to emergencies and have never made a moment to plan for the best use of their time.
As Vander Cam wrote, "people lament that they want to have strategic thinking time, but they are too busy!"
She suggests planning at least once a week, or making a big plan once a week, and then making some small plans at the end of the project.
She also recommends planning for different time frames.
For example, at the end of the year, you can plan for the next year, and then in the weekly plan, make sure that you are making steady progress towards these goals.
3. make success possible.
In a new plan, it's easy to get excited about your goals at the beginning, too ambitious.
And then ended in failure.
But it is more likely that a dream can be achieved by setting up a few viable tasks for yourself and ensuring that you are responsible for it.
First, turn the grand project into zero, and then strive to limit yourself to three to six steps per day.
Then, make sure you accomplish these step-by-step goals.
Vander Cam said, everyone has different accountability system, she uses the accountability partners, every Friday to report to this partner.
Others may want a more punitive or more open way, such as making promises on the Stickk website, etc. people can set goals on this website and promise that if they fail, they will do something daunting, like donating money to a machine that they hate.
4. know what is
work
Many of us spend a lot of time answering email all day.
Vander Cam wrote, "according to the socio economic report published by McKinsey Global Institute in 2012, knowledge workers spend 28% of their time in reading their inboxes effortlessly."
But checking email is not the same as "work" - what Vander Cam calls "work" is the core of what you are trying to accomplish.
"E-mail constantly invade available time," she said.
It will take less time to arrange e-mail, and it will take less time. "
If you ignore your inbox, you will feel uneasy. Van de Kam suggests that you should start to quit the box office obsessive-compulsive disorder: take 20 minutes to process the mail in an hour, and then concentrate on a task in the remaining 40 minutes.
Finally, pull up the interval of two times every time you look at the mailbox.
There is also a matter that looks like work but not always work: meetings.
"A meeting is held because you want something to be changed at the end of the meeting."
She said.
"The problem is that people often meet to make sure that everyone is still doing their own work - but I hope your staff is self-conscious and does not need you to check posts."
She also pointed out that many people regard meeting arrangements as a way to set deadlines.
She said that if you are a task manager, you should state that you will not meet for inspection work, but you still need to finish the project within a specified time.
In short, she said, "in some people's lives, meetings must be taken seriously."
For this reason, she suggested avoiding frequent meetings.
"Everything that takes an hour to do should be a reasonable decision."
Five
Practice
Vander Cam pointed out in her book that when professional musicians or professional athletes spend time practicing their skills and sports skills, many other people are not equally diligent.
"However, if you think about it, your job is probably a form of performance."
She wrote.
This means that you can consciously practice your work skills with your goal of self-improvement, though you will need to consult other people's feedback.
"This is a missing part of many people's work."
Vander Cam said.
"We don't get as much feedback as we need.
People will make annual performance appraisals, but it is rather useless comparing with what you did in this demonstration.
If you can't get regular feedback, then after you finish a task or finish a demonstration, ask your superiors what aspects can be improved next time.
Or, find a peer friend, ask him to check in front of him before you actually start the presentation before sending it to your boss.
6. accumulate business
capital
Suppose you lost your job today (I hope not).
In order to find a new job, you have to use your professional capital. In Vander Cam's words, "your experience, knowledge, skills and connections" can make you get a new job when needed, create new situations for yourself or others, or even let you rest for a while, instead of letting your career die.
Successful people tend to save business capital on a regular basis.
There are three ways to accumulate career capital.
First, improve your skills and adopt important new skills in your area of work.
Take a professional development course, or ask a mentor to help you figure out what you need to learn to succeed in the next five, ten or twenty years.
The two is to develop their own works.
Vander Cam wrote, "one of the advantages of writing or making an illustrator is that your work meets the market, even if you are not there, and these works can also speak for you and your mind."
That's why many experts in many fields, from medicine to business, have been writing books.
But writing or publishing is not the only way to create this collection.
Any work that results in real visibility will have the same effect.
The third way to accumulate career capital is also the ultimate way to establish a network of loyalty to you.
You can achieve this by introducing your colleagues to other people you know and may be helpful to them, and accompany them when they are in low spirits.
"Anyone can have lunch with a successful person."
"Real capital comes from having lunch with people who have just lost their jobs," Vander Cam said.
7. pursue happiness
Vander Cam found that the last common feature of successful people is that they can find happiness in their work.
Although many jobs are unsatisfactory, as time goes on, she suggests that we should try our best to adjust our time and spend more time on things we love and less time to do things we don't like.
Her other finding is that, in turn, happiness often comes from the progress felt at work.
In fact, the joy of progress in work is greater than the encouragement of the boss.
Therefore, focusing on the core part of your work that can measure and give you the greatest sense of accomplishment will bring you joy and further stimulate your desire to work.
So, in Vander Cam's view, which of the seven above is the most important? It is a slow process to deposit regularly into our business capital account.
But she said, "if you look at your career in the long run, for example, I will not spend any time with any unit, but I will always be with myself.
What can I do to make sure that "I" is a good partner? If you accumulate a little bit of career capital every day, your career will be hard to get by.
