Burma Considers Tariff Reduction Of Import Textiles In Taiwan

The government is considering lowering tariffs on textiles imported from Taiwan to show friendship.

In the first 7 months of this year, Taiwan's exports to Southeast Asia declined by 11.56%, and its export performance was poor. The Ministry of economic affairs of Taiwan of China went abroad for sale several times.

The delegation to Taiwan was led by Yang Zhenni, director of the International Trade Bureau of the Ministry of economic affairs of China, the delegation visited Yangon from September 9th to 12 and met with the Ministry of trade of Burma. The main purpose was to strive to export business opportunities to Burma, with a focus on reducing the Burmese side.

7 categories of items, such as tariff, are as follows: first, agricultural machinery, seeds and rice varieties to improve business opportunities; two, assist Burmese to produce agricultural products.

Capacity building; three, to help Myanmar to build trade facilitation capabilities; four, standard inspection cooperation; five, hope that the Burma side will reduce import tariffs on textile products in Taiwan, China; six, exchange trade statistics with Burma; and seven, strengthen trade promotion measures in Burma.

Textiles are an important commodity for Taiwan's exports to Burma. In 2014, the export volume was about 32 million US dollars, accounting for 14% of Burma's exports.

At present, the import tariff of Burma's Taiwan textiles is 5-15%, lowering tariffs will further promote imports, and it is not known whether the tariff of textile imports will be adjusted in other countries.
