Behind the exhibition, there is always a message that curators and organizations want to convey.

This is also true of the Modus exhibition in Madrid, Spain.

Modus exhibition explores Spain's history and traditional culture to the world.

    fashion

Including the impact of emerging designers.

And a new generation of young Spain

    Designer

They are awakening their "Spanish characteristics" again: ancient traditions, religious images, and even black elements. Centuries ago, black was the symbol of the Spanish ruling monarchy.

Modus exhibition curator Raul Marina said: "this is a very important moment in Spanish fashion history. Spanish designers, including Palomo Spain, Leandro Cano and ManeMane, are re shaping Spain's position in the fashion industry."

Fashion consultant Marta Blanco said that the Spanish fashion industry was "awakening" and there was a sense that every Spaniard began to return to the Franco regime.

Designers like Leandro Cano can draw inspiration from Spanish bullfighting and religious intentions, but have nothing to do with fascism. "

Marta Blanco's so-called "awakening" lies not only in the design side but also in the consumer group. "More and more Spaniards are proud of their country and their people."

This pride comes from more Spaniards in their respective fields of excellence, the use of Marta Blanco, that is, "(these achievements to the Spaniard) empowerment."

For example, the Spanish chef Ferran Adria promoted the global revolution in the cooking world. The Spanish football team won the European Cup in 2008 and 2012, and also won the world cup in 2010. In addition, Nadal (Rafael Nadal) became the world's top tennis player, and Spain's fast fashion brand.

    All over the world...

    Spanish fashion history

    black

Take black as an example, this color has now become the representative color of French elegance. This is the little black dress designed by Ms. Coco Chanel in 1920s.

But as early as sixteenth Century, Spaniards began to use black in their costumes.

Before that, black has always been a hard to wear upper body color.

After repeated washing or long-term use, the dye will fade and turn into a soft object with gray and nearly brown.

With the Spanish conquest of America, specifically in Mexico in sixteenth Century, they found a tree called Logwood.

The wood of the Korean wood tree can be made into a strong dyed black dye.

As the main economic and political power at that time, Felipe II, then king of Spain, took black as his exclusive color and quickly caused a wave of fashion in black Philip S.

"The Spanish monarchy is the reference of all European monarchy countries, and its plain black robes also represent supreme elegance," Amalia Descalzo, ISEM Fashion Business School, a fashion history expert in Spanish fashion business school, wrote in the Modus exhibition handbook.

As time goes on to modern times, many overseas and Spanish designers, such as Cristobal Balenciaga, play a leading role in the series of personal brand works. Meanwhile, young designers are constantly interpreting their own ways of black.

For example, the ManeMane brand's black tights and skirts displayed in the Modus exhibition are also matched with the typical hat of Miguel Becer's hometown, Spain's southwest of Extremadura.

    Skirt

According to the world clothing and shoe net, Spain not only promoted the application of black in the field of clothing in sixteenth Century, but also created a unique clothing structure: verdugado.

The Spanish skirt was originally made of wood, and it was a device that women wore in their skirts and made their skirts into different shapes.

At first, it became popular in the upper classes of Spain, and gradually spread to England, France and even Europe.

Following verdugado, Spain created another trend: guardainfante, this kind of skirt needs to hang on the side of the wearer's body to expand the skirt on one side.

Raul Marina pointed out: "this kind of skirt can stop the pregnant abdomen of women."

Guardainfante appeared in Spanish painter Diego Velazquez's famous work "Las Meninas" (Figure 1).

The influence of this kind of skirt can be found on the yellow bell velvet long skirt of the young designer Juanjo Oliva in this Modus Exhibition (below two).

    Cultural elements

The key words that come to mind in Spain are bullfight and flamenco.

The two cultures exported from Spain to the whole world give designers unlimited inspiration.

Raul Marina said: "the industry has a saying that overseas designers have long been immersed in Spanish characteristics and are more proud than we (Spaniards)."

The brand and works that incorporate Spanish elements in the design are:

French luxury brand Givenchy (Givenchy) has introduced a black velvet flamenco style jacket with red embroidery and pearls.

French classic luxury brand Lanvin has introduced a cream wave point black lotus leaf skirt inspired by the flamenco tradition in southern Andalusia, Spain.

The trend of "overseas prosperity and local weakness" is also changing. The more religious and traditional elements appear in the works of a new generation of Spanish designers.

    Such as:

In 2017, Beyonce, Beyonce, wore a corolla of Palomo Spain, wearing a white silk skirt and a light headed scarf. She took a group of photos with the twins who were born soon.

Lady Gaga wore a White Ballet Dress with a flower pattern from the Leandro Cano brand. This dress was inspired by the rule of King Philip Sans.

ManeMane's works assimilate into traditional handicrafts in Extremadura, Spain.
