Paris, December 2, facing the prosperity of the second-hand clothing sales platform, some large French groups look ahead to business opportunities, hoping to seize a place in the market.
According to the Parisian daily, in 2018, the total clothing market in France amounted to 26 billion euros, and secondhand clothing consumed 1 billion euros worth of cake. According to research data from the French Fashion Institute (IFM), nearly 1/3 of French consumers bought second-hand goods this year, compared with 15% in 2010. It can be said that although the second-hand clothing market is still limited in scale, it is booming. According to the current growth rate, the proportion of secondhand goods in French consumer wardrobes is expected to double in 10 years.
Reported that consumers buy second-hand clothing is mainly due to economic factors, but environmental awareness and moral considerations also gradually occupy an increasingly important weight. Gilda Minvielle, director of the economic observation center of the French Fashion Institute, believes that this is a global trend starting in the field of food, and the public needs inexpensive products of Gildas. As a result, although the share of the secondary market has increased over the past 10 years, the total value of the fashion market has dropped by 15% between 2007 and 2018.
In the face of the prosperity of the second-hand clothing sales platform such as Vinted, Videdressing, Vestiaire Collective, the large clothing groups have made every effort to eat cake, some brands or clothing companies have incorporated the second-hand goods into the development framework, and some independent clothing stores have also opened up second-hand goods area. For example, the French children's clothing brand Cyrillus, Petit Bateau and fashion brand shop S Zane Zane have created specialized second-hand trading websites or application programs to resell their clothes on these platforms. Sweden's fast fashion brand H&M has also increased investment in Sellpy, a second-hand online sales platform, but is currently being tested only in Sweden.
In April this year, French Lafayette department store launched a new hybrid mode: selling second-hand clothes online and carrying out on-site trading at Lyon Part-Dieu, Lyon. Similarly, dkids, Oka, Di, Oba Bi, Jacadi, Oxyul-Eveil and other clothing stores hold many barter activities every year, which promotes the second-hand transactions, but also brings the guests into the shop to promote the new clothes.
