Guo Kezun, Vice President Of AMD Global: Female President Challenging Male World
Gerd once said "character is destiny", and Guo Kun's key to success lies in her courage to challenge her personality.
In the past few years as a vice president and President of Greater China, AMD, the most successful professional manager in China's IT world, has been exposed by the media.
Guo Ke is undoubtedly a special case in the successful entrepreneur of IT in China.
She is not only the most important woman in AMD global sustainable development, but also one of the most influential figures in the field of IT in China.
Guo Kun has completed a great pformation from a female scientist to a female CEO, and has made a multinational company's Chinese business bigger and stronger.
Gerd once said "character is destiny", and Guo Kun's key to success lies in her courage to challenge her personality.
In 2002, when Guo Kun Chung took over AMD's China business, many people thought that it was almost impossible to challenge Intel.
She hesitated, but the courage to move forward allowed her to accept the challenge. "I should try and challenge myself."
Guo Kun has always believed that as long as we make persistent efforts, there will be gains, because her starting point is "win-win cooperation".
Under the inspiration of her "China Complex", AMD headquarters slowly accepted China's "harmony" culture and pferred to China the highest specification X86 processor technology allowed by the US government at that time.
These are widely viewed as forward-looking, relying on the profound insights and insights gained by Guo Kun Chung in the past 30 years of China's IT industry's leaping development.
Guo Kun, who was interviewed by reporters, did not like to talk in broad terms. Every word made by the scientist was so critical and thought-provoking.
When it comes to how women can succeed, she says, be diligent, persistent, and dare to challenge and surpass yourself.
"There are some areas that are indeed men's world, but women can stand out if they dare to challenge."
More than 10 years ago, when Guo Kun Chung met Hu Qiheng, vice president of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, he was deeply impressed by Hu's style. "I admire her and hope to become an outstanding woman like her."
She did.
With the tenacity and wisdom of Eastern women and the fortitude and innovation forged during the western learning, Guo Kun has surpassed himself and won the respect of the industry.
•, • AMD, senior vice president of AMD, China's chief executive of the Greater China region, is the only female company in the world.
After joining AMD6, she made China the largest single market in the AMD world and gained support from all mainstream PC manufacturers in the Chinese market.
Today, AMD Greater China is the largest single market and the second largest business center in the world. Guo Kun Chung has thus become the most successful Chinese CEO in the history of AMD.
1988, a senior research fellow of Concurrent Computer Corporation research and development center, 1992, deputy director of the national intelligent computer research center, and associate professor of Computing Institute of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 1995, joined the Motorola in 1995. He became the director of the Motorola Research Institute of China and director of the digital Genetics Laboratory of the semiconductor department, joined 2002 in 2002. She served as AMD global vice president, China general manager, 2004 global AMD vice president, President of Greater China, senior vice president of 2006 global AMD, President of the Greater China region.
How did she do that?
Guo Kezun said that the Chinese people pay attention to "take the initiative and take the lead". AMD not only takes profits from the Chinese market, but also has to invest in the country.
This is what she wants to do.
At that time, we faced a huge gap of 10 x 10.
In 2002, when Guo joined AMD, he faced an "impossible task".
At that time, Intel, AMD's competitor, had been in the lead for 10 years, and its market share was 10 times that of AMD.
As early as 1993, AMD started its business in China and established the Far East Office of AMD limited. But most of its managers were in Hongkong, and there were only a few lower ranking salesmen in the mainland.
After 2000, AMD headquarters realized the importance of the Chinese market and decided to localize in China, including the appointment of local managers in China, so that AMD could take root in the Chinese market.
The appointment of Guo Kun Chung is a new strategy for AMD in China.
In 2002, Guo Kun Chun formally joined AMD and was fully responsible for AMD Greater China business.
However, at that time, AMD had missed the golden age of development in China. This "lost 10 years" made almost all mainstream PC manufacturers stand on Intel side, Intel accounted for almost 100% of the brand machine market.
Without the support of any brand manufacturer, AMD's products can only be found in the market of Zhongguancun's major computer cities.
How does AMD catch up with his opponent?
Guo Kun is under tremendous pressure.
But Guo Kun, once engaged in scientific research in the Chinese Academy of Sciences, has been accustomed to finding solutions in the face of problems. She decided to walk out of a different "core" road.
After the establishment of "core", Guo Ke, Guo Ke, did not adopt the usual strategy of multinational companies to enter China.
She knows that in order to achieve "AMD", we must make it truly integrate into China and become a company close to China.
She put forward her strategy to the US headquarters: "the core of China is to win the future."
Guo Kun said, "the Chinese people should be" willing to take it first. "
Guo Kun, who is well versed in Chinese culture and Western thinking, understands that if we want to take root in China, we must make AMD adjust our ideas and make long-term investments in China instead of purely commercial activities. We must invest in China when we take profits from China.
Under this background, Guo Kun has led the AMD global headquarters to pfer the X86 chip core technology to China.
Guo Kuo Chung said, "we need to guide the headquarters to recognize that the Chinese market has great potential to pfer X86 technology and help China make independent innovation to enable AMD to participate in China's strategic development".
In 2005, AMD announced that the core technology of X86 microprocessor was pferred to China without compensation, which shocked the Chinese and American science and technology circles at that time.
Through this move, Guo Kun has successfully demonstrated to the government and the outside world that AMD not only came to China to sell products, but also a part of China's information industry, and customers and end-users began to trust AMD.
In 2004, AMD announced that it had collaborate with Shuguang for supercomputer cooperation, and successfully brought the performance of China's supercomputers to the top ten in the year.
Through a series of localization measures, Guo Kun Chung's AMD quickly reversed its backward image in the Chinese market, and Guo's strong localization attitude made AMD win the respect of the Chinese government.
He took the Lenovo and broke out the "core" sky to fight for PC manufacturers from competitors.
"AMD wants to keep close to OEM partners. First of all, it should be close to geographical location."
In 2002, when Guo Kun came to AMD China office in Oriental Plaza, she felt that this prosperous place was not the most suitable place for AMD.
Therefore, she insisted on moving the AMD China headquarters from East Plaza to Zhongguancun.
In 2004, when AMD headquarters moved to Zhongguancun, many multinational IT companies fled.
And Guo Kun Chung's move provides an excellent opportunity for AMD to open up its rival camp.
In the same year, the domestic PC boss was trapped in the saturation of the one or two tier market and ready to enter the township market.
But Lenovo's idea of reducing the price of PC has been hit by Intel, a long-term partner.
"Intel responded to Lenovo's proposal at the time cold, Lenovo was forced to turn to AMD for cooperation."
One AMD employee recalled.
This opportunity is grabbed by Guo Kun, who is sensitive to the fact that this is a good opportunity for AMD to seize the PC boss in China.
After consulting with the headquarters, Guo Kun took the decision to cooperate with Lenovo in only 12 hours.
Subsequently, Lenovo adopted the AMD processor and launched the "dream" series of products priced at 2999 yuan, which successfully entered the township market.
The success of Lenovo has since laid a long-term cooperation with AMD - Guo Kun has achieved the goal of prying up the rival camp.
"AMD and customers are not just sales relations, but partners. When he is in trouble, I have the responsibility to help him."
Guo Kezun said that this kind of mutual Chinese "harmony" culture led AMD to take Lenovo and take this as a starting point to quickly win other brand PC manufacturers.
The fact also proves that due to the price pressure brought by Lenovo and AMD cooperation, Chinese PC manufacturers are gradually increasing their cooperation with AMD.
Today, AMD has established close strategic cooperation with Lenovo, founder, dawning, Tongfang, TCL and Qixi, and other domestic PC manufacturers.
At the same time, AMD has also strengthened its cooperation with DELL, HP, IBM, Sun, Toshiba and other leading computer manufacturers in China.
In 2004, HP first launched the first AMD64 bit processor desktop in China; in 2006, the first AMD core DELL notebook entered China.
By 2006, the share of AMD in China's chip market has risen from single digit to over 25%, and the three digit growth rate has completely reversed the "thin market" status in China's brand machine market, becoming the most powerful competitor of Intel chip giant.
In contrast, the share of AMD has increased the share of rival Intel in China.
To this end, Intel made personnel adjustments in 2006, and the two general manager of the China region left office. Yang Xu, who was promoted to Intel Asia Pacific executive a year ago, is in charge of the Chinese district.
In the IT industry for more than 20 years, Guo Kun Chun has successfully pformed from a scientist to the best female CEO in the IT industry. Under the background that the outside world is not optimistic, she successfully reversed the achievements of AMD Greater China and achieved her own career legend.
IT women and local professional managers will stand out as long as they are diligent, constantly challenging themselves and never give up.
From childhood, he became a scientist. He was in the headquarters of AMD Greater China in Zhongguancun. The sun was clear and warm, and it was sprinkled at Guo Kun's desk.
As warm as this sunshine is her greetings and enthusiasm, the head of the AMD Greater China region has introduced the experience of her IT industry for more than 20 years.
"Everyone has dreams, and my childhood dream is to be a scientist."
Guo Kezun told reporters that, like many college students in that era, Guo Kun Chung went to the United States in the tide of studying abroad and served as a senior researcher at the Concurrent Computer Corporation R & D center in the United States.
In 1992, Guo Kun Chung, who returned from studying abroad, came to Beijing to join the Institute of computing, Chinese Academy of Sciences.
Soon, he was appointed deputy director of China National Intelligent Computer Research Center.
After that, Guo Ke, a technocrat, joined Motorola and served as director of the Motorola Research Institute of China and director of the digital Genetics Laboratory of the semiconductor department.
During this period, Guo Kun Chun directly promoted Motorola's research and development in China, and helped Motorola achieve substantial growth in China.
Guo recalled that this time of "technology", Guo Kun Chun was full of gratitude.
Guo Kun told reporters that the solid technical background and profound understanding of China's IT industry made her more forward-looking in the IT industry than others.
"Managers with technical backgrounds are more understanding of technological innovation, not only to provide customers with the best solution, but also to see the future more accurately."
So far, the research and development experience of scientists has been regarded as a valuable asset of Guo Kezun's life.
She believes that through research and development of the industry accumulation, R & D practice of internal practice, the implementation of the style of things, makes her face new challenges, more advantages than others.
At this point, a new contract with new challenges and opportunities is placed before Guo Kun Chung.
In the pformation of CEO to meet the new challenge, Lu Yizhi was impressed by Motorola's semiconductor product manager, Ruiz, when he was president of the China Research Institute at Motorola.
Lu Yizhi joined AMD as president and chief operating officer in 2000, and was appointed CEO in April 2002.
Lu Yizhi then invited Guo Kun to join AMD, and Guo Kun Tun received the contract terms quite attractive. Lu Yizhi invited her to become president of AMD China.
But at that time, Guo Kezun was rather hesitant about the invitation. She recalled afterwards that the reason for her hesitation was that the enterprises and research institutes were two concepts.
