Tang Wei: From The Dishwasher To The Leader Of Wall Street
Bell Sten, vice chairman and chairman of international investment company, the sixth largest investment bank in the world, is currently the most senior Asian member in Wall Street.
It's hard to imagine that when he came to the United States 23 years ago when he came to Shanghai from the United States, he had only 20 dollars in his pocket. He had no financial knowledge in his head and started working at the bottom of the restaurant.
In 1981, my girlfriend and his family emigrated to the United States. Tang Wei, who has been admitted to the national key university, is facing the first pass of life.
"I felt there was only one option at that time: to go abroad with my girlfriend."
In high school, in order to be able to work with the girl who was in the first year of age, he spent a summer studying hard, and achieved the best result through the skipping examination.
He found a telephone number on the phone book for the emergency situation of the US citizen and the Consul General in Shanghai.
The Consul General of the United States, who spoke Chinese well, understood this young man very well and gave many suggestions.
A few months later, Tang Wei completed all the formalities and went to the US consulate in the early morning.
The visa officer asked him if he would come back, and he told him not to be sure. If his girlfriend came back, he would be back, or she would stay with her in the United States and refused to sign on the grounds of immigration.
Out of the door, Tang wept a lot. After waking up, he hurriedly called the consul general. The consul really helped him get a visa through the back door.
The fifty-seventh interview was successful. Tang Wei spent the most difficult years in the first few years in the United States.
"When I work in a restaurant, I can only sleep two or three hours a day, and I don't have a day's rest throughout the year," he said.
Because there is no green card, the hourly income is only 1 dollars.
But I think I can earn nearly 1 months' salary of my father a day, and I feel happy again.
The English class in the language school is too deep. The bus that goes up and down has become the best school in Tang Wei. Today, Tang Wei, who can speak fluent English, speaks humbly that he is talking about bus English.
Relying on diligence and optimism, Tang Wei stood at his feet.
On one occasion, a robbery gunman was wounded by a gun to protect his money box. He was appreciated by his boss. He went up to the district manager and got the annual salary of $80 thousand. At that time, he was only 22 years old.
Tang Wei resigned later because his parents wanted him to work in chemistry related to the University.
But he failed in the 56 interview.
The first interview of the girl and her wife was successful.
Tang Wei became a "master of the family". He saw nothing but a financial program on television and taught to invest in stocks. For the first time, he knew that he could still earn money like this. He studied very seriously, and fired several times with his wife's wages, and he made a profit of 50% in 1 months.
Shortly afterwards, he accidentally received a call from his stockbroker: "I notice that you are very talented in investing in stocks. Would you like to join our industry?"
The fifty-seventh interview allowed him to enter the new field of investment banking.
Until then, I realized my failure in the first 56 interviews.
Because my annual salary as a restaurant manager is far higher than that of my job interview, and my face will show no pleasure. Who will want me? "
When he entered Merrill Lynch, he knew that in 1986, at the age of 23, he was the only person working in Wall Street in mainland China at that time.
In accordance with the practice of investment banks, a newly hired company must have at least 12 years to go to senior management and a MBA degree.
It took Tang Wei only 6 years to do that.
His first job in Wall Street was exchange rate business with clients from mainland China.
His boss said that he did not have a financial knowledge of the Chinese because he could speak both English and Chinese.
At that time, Wall Street's discerning financiers had been keenly aware of the potential huge business opportunities in the mainland of China in reform and opening up. They needed Chinese employees.
When Tang Wei got a good record, other Wall Street bosses couldn't sit still.
This young man without professional knowledge can do so well. Why don't we go to a Chinese student studying economics in American universities?
Almost overnight, there were many strong competitors around Tang Wei.
"But I was not scared at all."
Tang Wei recalled, "first of all, I fully believe that I can do this business well, because there are already self-made experiences in restaurants and exchange rates.
Secondly, I accumulated experience and knowledge in practice, and I can do new blank areas that no one else has done.
After he became the practitioner of Sino US bond and stock trading, he was sent to Hongkong Bell Sten Asia company when he was 29 years old. He served as the first chairman and undertook the first batch of overseas listing of Chinese state-owned enterprises.
After he returned to Chicago, he was in charge of the Central American business, and helped the mainland's private enterprises to go abroad to introduce foreign investment into central China.
Every success in opening up a blank space is like a golden step to build Tang Wei's road to success.
He became a senior manager, vice president, director, managing director and vice-chairman of the famous investment bank in Wall Street.
On his pcript, there are Merrill Lynch company's West Coast performance first and Lehman brothers global performance first salesman, and more than more than 10 successful Chinese companies listed in Bell Sten, such as China Mobile, Beijing, Yanhua, Guangzhou Shenzhen Expressway, Yanzhou coal mine, China Telecom and ninth cities.
