American Apparel And Footwear Association Calls For Extension Of Import Ban In Burma

The AAFA accused Burma of abusing human rights. The president and chief executive of M. Burke called on Congress to take action to extend the upcoming import ban on Burma.

In a few letters to members of Congress, Burke wrote: "the American Apparel and Footwear Association believes that restarting economic sanctions against Burma is more important than ever.

The letter called for an extension of the import ban in the Burma free and democratic law of 2003.

AAFA was the first trade organization to call for the first Burma import ban in 2003.

The current import ban expires in July 26, 2008.

Burke said that as long as other countries continue to trade with Burma, our unilateral sanctions will have only limited effect.

He said: "I hope that the world community will join the US economic sanctions action and send a clear signal to the government of Burma that human rights can not be trampled on, and that small groups can not oppress Burma's good people.

Outside, many organizations and governments in Burma are still abusing human rights.

In addition, the world has recently seen horror that the Burma government has made an unusual response to the damage caused by Hurricane Nargis, thus greatly worsening the tragedy of the hurricane.
