The Institute has always attached importance to the cultivation of students' innovative spirit and innovative ability. The college has the right to grant master's and doctor's degrees in two disciplines of design art and fine arts, and also has a post doctoral research station for art.

In January 2001, "art of design" was appraised by the Ministry of education as the "key subject of national universities".

Since the reform and opening up, the faculty and students have made remarkable achievements in various major artistic design activities at home and abroad. They have accomplished over 200 national and international major art and design projects, and have won over 300 awards from various international and domestic awards. They have published more than 300 teaching materials and monographs, and have produced more than 100 teaching materials and audio-visual lectures on CCTV and Beijing TV stations.

At present, the college is applying for the National Key Laboratory of social sciences.

The Institute consists of three branches, namely, design, fine arts and history, a training center.

The design division consists of dyeing and weaving art design department, ceramic art design department, industrial design department, environmental art design department, decoration art design department and information art design department. The fine arts department is composed of painting department, sculpture department, arts and crafts department and basic teaching and research section.

The college has a group of famous art educators, artists and scholars.

At present, there are 195 teachers, including 54 professors (18 doctoral tutors) and 84 associate professors.

In May 21st, the State Council of People's Republic of China formally approved the establishment of the central craft Academy of Fine Arts.

The faculty consists of the practical arts department of the East China branch of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, the professional arts department of China Central Academy of Fine Arts, the Department of Tsinghua University construction and other experts from abroad.

In accordance with the reform of the national higher education management system and the adjustment spirit of the layout structure, the Ministry of Education approved the merger of the college into Tsinghua University in November 20, 1999 and renamed it Academy of Fine Arts, Tsinghua University.

In September 28, 2005, Academy of Fine Arts moved to a new teaching building in Tsinghua University.
