Sha Chu Kang

Sha Zukang was born in 1947 in Yixing, Jiangsu. He graduated from Nanjing University.

He served as the counsellor of the permanent mission of China to the United Nations, the deputy director of the international division of the Ministry of foreign affairs, the permanent ambassador for Disarmament Affairs in Geneva, the director of the Department of military control of the Ministry of foreign affairs, the representatives and ambassadors of the permanent office of China to the United Nations Office in Geneva and other international organizations in Switzerland.

In his 37 years diplomatic career, Sha Zukang has been involved in many fields of politics, security, economy, society, human rights and humanity. He has taken part in many important diplomatic decisions and is a participant and witness of China's diplomacy since reform and opening up.

In February 2007, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon appointed Sha Zukang as Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, responsible for economic and social affairs.

It is a great honor for me to send a message to World Expo, Shanghai, China in 2010.

"Better City, better life" - the theme of China's 2010 World Expo, Shanghai, is more closely linked to the United Nations and World Expo.

Over the years, the change of World Expo theme reflects not only the positive influence of the United Nations on World Expo, but also the positive promoter of World Expo's historical trend.

In 1972, the United Nations held its first environmental themed International Conference in Stockholm, Sweden.

Two years later, the international environmental exposition was held in Spokane, USA. This is the first environmental theme World Expo in history.

In 1982, the first energy themed World Expo was held in Knoxville, United States.

In 1992, the United Nations Conference on environment and development, known as the Earth Summit, adopted a programmatic document to achieve sustainable development, the twenty-first Century agenda.

In 2002, the United Nations held the World Summit on sustainable development in Johannesburg, which further promoted the harmonious relationship between man and nature and economic growth.

World Expo is also increasingly reflecting the concept of "sustainable development".

Such as the 1998 Lisbon World Expo, the theme of "ocean and future wealth", Hannover World Expo, which is the theme of "human, nature and technology" in 2000, and Aichi World Expo, the theme of "natural wisdom" in 2005.

In 2010, Shanghai World Expo took the city as the theme, and explored the future of the global city from the perspective of scientific development and sustainable development.

Twenty-first Century is an important period for urban development.

At present, the number of people living in cities in the world is more than half.

The growth of world population in the future will mainly be concentrated in cities in developing countries.

How to build a harmonious city and realize the sustainable development of the city is a major and urgent global issue.

China has the largest number of urban population in the world - about 580 million people. Therefore, China is at the forefront of coping with the challenges of urbanization. It needs to coordinate the relationship between economic growth and environmental protection, history and modern, urban and rural areas.

A better city and a better life are dreams of every city and inhabitant in the world.

World Expo is a platform for display, communication, cooperation and innovation.

I hope and believe that Shanghai World Expo brings many creative ideas and surprises to the world, which will exert a positive influence on the way of human life in the next one hundred years.

Shanghai is the Pearl of the Orient and the model of the world city.

In order to leave more spiritual wealth and enlighten the world to the Shanghai World Expo, the United Nations will hold a summit forum with the Chinese government and the International Exhibition Bureau on the closing day of October 31, 2010 in World Expo. Through the Shanghai declaration, the theme will be summed up and the results will become the climax and crystallization of World Expo for six months.

In 2010, World Expo was first held in developing countries.

China can host this event because of its great achievements in going backward and prospering.

The Qing government rejected World Expo, and the Chinese people embraced World Expo today. For many years, Chinese people went abroad to participate in World Expo. In 2010, China held World Expo in Shanghai.

The 5000 years of civilization in China has contributed four great inventions and lots of creations to the world.

Shanghai is China's earliest port city, witnessing the vicissitudes of modern Chinese history and collision between East and West.

China was weak yesterday and is catching up today.

The 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing and World Expo in Shanghai in 2010 will be a milestone in the process of China's modernization.

A confident and prosperous China is an important force to promote world peace, development and cooperation.

Shanghai is my birthplace. I am proud of Shanghai's successful preparations for World Expo and the pride of our motherland's economic development and social progress.

As Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, I will make a contribution to World Expo.
