    Silver and its compounds have been widely used in daily life as a kind of antibacterial materials. Nano silver particles as a nano antibacterial material in the silver family are very popular.

    However, nano silver is easy to reunite and easy to oxidize under light.

    This instability greatly limits its application in medicine.


    Huang Qinghe and Fan Chunhai, a researcher at the Institute of Applied Physics in Shanghai, and Professor Li Shutang, City University Hong Kong, have used a new type of one-dimensional semiconductor nanomaterials, silicon nanowires as substrates, in situ using hydrogen saturated silicon nanowires to restore silver salts on the silicon wire surface to form nano silver / silicon nanowire composites.

    The synergistic effect of the composite improved the dispersion of silver nanoparticles, especially the stability of light.


    According to the introduction, this composite material shows excellent antibacterial properties. For example, 1% of nano silver / silicon nanowire suspension (volume ratio) can delay the growth period of Galanz negative bacteria and positive bacteria for about 20 hours, while 10% of suspension can completely inhibit the growth of bacteria.

    Moreover, this composite material has little cytotoxicity on mammalian cells.

    The preparation method of the composite is simple and environmentally friendly.

    Further studies show that when the composite is prepared into film, it can still play a strong bacteriostatic effect, which lays the foundation for medical and environmental applications.
