What Makes A Leader?
An outstanding
leader
What qualities do we have to possess?
Many people will say that leaders must be smart, smart, persistent, decisive, forward-looking and so on.
However, only these qualities are not enough, because even if one has the best training in the world, careful, sensitive and creative, but if the EQ is low, it will still not become an excellent leader.
The author, psychologist Daniel Gorman, used Emotional Intelligence (Chinese version of emotional intelligence quotient) in 1995 to "
EQ
The concept is introduced to the public.
In 1998, he published this classic article in the Harvard Business Review English magazine, and took the lead in applying this concept to the business field.
Goleman calculated the contribution rate of professional skills, intelligence quotient and EQ to outstanding performance respectively, and found that the contribution rate of EQ was at least two times of that of the other two factors.
Moreover, the higher the position in a company, the more important the EQ function is, because at this level, the difference in professional skills has become insignificant.
If we compare the top performance stars with the mediocrity, we can find that nearly 90% of their performance differences are due to EQ rather than cognitive ability.
Goleman believed that EQ contained the following five elements:
1. self cognition and self cognition are the ability to understand their emotions, emotions and inner driving forces and their influence on others.
People with self-knowledge hold an honest attitude towards people and themselves. They should not be overly critical or unrealistic in their work.
They understand their limitations and strengths, and do not shy away from discussing them. They often welcome constructive criticism.
They will admit their failures and dare to laugh at themselves.
People with self-knowledge are often more confident and aware of their abilities. They are unlikely to accept tasks beyond their limits and know when to seek help.
2. self regulation and self-regulation is the ability to control or dredge negative emotions and destructive impulses.
People who are good at controlling their emotions often introspection. They always deliberate and do not rush to judge.
In the face of uncertainty, they are calm and responsive.
Self regulating people have the ability to create a fair and trustworthy environment and promote integrity.
3. internal drive is a goal driven by a sense of achievement, which seeks beyond self and other expectations.
People who pursue a sense of achievement are passionate about their work and tend to have a sense of belonging to the organization that provides the job.
They are willing to learn, and they are proud of every success in their work.
They also keep improving performance benchmarks and actively track performance levels.
These energetic people are usually not comfortable with the status quo.
They will persist in asking why things must be done instead of doing that, and they will actively explore new ways of doing things.
4. empathy is the ability to understand other people's feelings and to respond to others' emotional reactions.
Empathy people can understand the subtle meaning of body language, and they can understand the meaning of others.
This helps them cross cultural exchanges more effectively today in the accelerated pace of globalization.
Empathy also helps to train talents and retain talents, as well as condensing teams.
5. social skills, social skills, may be the concentrated expression of other elements of EQ. It is a ability to seek common ground and establish rapport with others.
People who can understand and regulate their emotions and feel other people's emotions can often handle interpersonal relationships effectively.
People who are strong in driving are often optimistic, and their spirit will be reflected in their conversation with others and other contacts.
Social skills are not just friendliness. It is a kind of friendliness with purpose, and the purpose is to guide others to advance in the direction you want.
People who are highly skilled in social skills are good at management team, persuasive and able to mobilize a wide range of human resources when needed.
The first three elements of EQ are self cognition.
Self regulation
And internal drive, all belong to self-management skills.
Then the two factor, empathy and social skills, is the ability of a person to manage his own relationship with others.
Research and practice show that EQ can be acquired, but you must devote time and effort to it.
