Guangdong province is located in the southernmost part of mainland China, and is adjacent to Hongkong and Macao.

Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province and the economic, technological, educational and cultural center of Southern China.

It is an international and distinctive teaching and research university. It is an important base for international talent cultivation and foreign language culture, foreign economic and trade, and international strategy research in Southern China.

Its predecessor is Guangzhou foreign languages institute and Guangzhou Institute of foreign trade.

Founded in 1965, Guangzhou Institute of foreign languages is a member of the former State Education Commission (now the Ministry of Education).

The Guangzhou Institute of foreign trade was established in 1980 and is directly under the Ministry of foreign trade and economic cooperation.

In June 1995, Guangzhou Institute of foreign languages and Guangzhou foreign trade college merged to form Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

In October 2008, Guangdong College of Finance and Economics was incorporated into Guangdong University of Foreign Studies.

The school has 3 campuses with a total area of 2290 mu, of which the north campus is located in the northern foot of the national scenic area, Guangzhou Baiyun Mountain, covering an area of 939 mu; the southern campus is located in the city of Guangzhou University and covers an area of 1095 mu; the Dalang campus is located in Dalang, Guangzhou, with an area of 256 mu.
