Puma Promised 2020 Supply Chain "Detoxification"
In July 26, 2011, the international sports brand Puma made public. Promise It will eliminate all toxic and harmful substances in its supply chain by 2020.
The reason for Puma's action is that Greenpeace, an international environmental group, has released an investigation report in Beijing, "the poison of fashion - the global clothing brand's water pollution survey in China." The report shows that 14 suppliers of global clothing brands, including Nike, Adidas, Lining and Puma, emit toxic and hazardous substances, causing water pollution in China.
The report further points out that the above-mentioned brands contain environmental hormone substances that can disrupt endocrine and affect reproductive system in the industrial waste water discharged by two suppliers in China. The two Chinese suppliers are YOUNGOR, a listed company located in Ningbo, Zhejiang, and Zhongshan Guotai dyeing and finishing Co., Ltd., located in Zhongshan, Guangdong.
Puma production link "detoxification"
Puma became the first brand to make a "detoxification" commitment to the public after the release of the survey report, just like the "supermodel" debut in the brand clothing industry.
The director of the green peace pollution prevention project, Li Yi direction, said, "we welcome Puma's positive commitment with a clear timetable, which is the biggest achievement we have achieved so far."
I read in the full text of Puma's statement that it has recognized the urgency of reducing and eventually eliminating toxic and harmful substances in industrial production. According to precautionary principle, Puma It is committed to eliminate all toxic and harmful substances in the supply chain before 2020, including not only the final products, but also the toxic and harmful substances emitted during the production process. Such substances include substances that are persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic. They are very persistent and highly bioaccumulative substances. They are carcinogenic, teratogenic and reproductive toxic substances and endocrine disruptors.
Puma said it needed to set up a list of toxic and harmful substances, which should be worked out jointly with other industries and updated regularly.
Considering that some toxic and harmful substances can not be dispelled by our environment. In this case, precautionary principle must be adopted to avoid serious and irreversible harm, even when there is lack of conclusive scientific evidence.
This commitment applies to the entire company, including all the suppliers and factories of Puma's own brands and authorized brands, including the lower level suppliers of these factories.
Puma said it would implement this commitment in all the first tier suppliers within 18 months, and to implement this commitment to two level suppliers including the wet process through a tier one supplier. At the same time, the implementation process will be announced through the annual sustainability report.
Li Yifang said that Greenpeace is still in contact with many brands including Adidas, Nike and Lining to make its commitment.
Lining said suppliers discharge standards
So far, the three sports brands such as Nike, Adidas and Lining have not committed themselves. "I hope they will publish an exact timetable for eliminating toxic and harmful substances as soon as Puma does." Li Yifang said.
After the report was released, Liu Xinyu, Secretary of YOUNGOR's board of directors, said that YOUNGOR had hired an international independent third party testing agency to detect sewage, and the test report showed "normal".
Greenpeace Li side explained that YOUNGOR hired another inspection agency to do the test, indicating that the PFOA value of the pollutants (0.36 mg per litre) is also greater than the value in the Greenpeace report (0.13-0.14 mg per litre).
Nike company has admitted that it is currently cooperating with two YOUNGOR factories in Zhejiang Province, namely Ningbo YOUNGOR Knitted Underwear Co. Ltd. and Ningbo YOUNGOR sportswear Manufacturing Co., Ltd. However, the cooperation in this area is only tailoring and sewing products. There is no production process of chemicals that the Greenpeace organization has pointed out. It is only to discharge daily life waste water to the sewage treatment plant.
Lining said that Zhongshan Guotai is one of the suppliers of knitted fabric of Lining. They have issued a test report by the local environmental protection department inspection station, and the emission is qualified.
Li pointed out that the textile industry consumes a lot of persistent and hazardous chemicals, and has become one of the main sources of water pollution. As a world factory, China has provided production bases for many domestic and foreign clothing brands, but at the same time, China has become a serious pollution area. The public health and environment in China have paid a price.
Consumers are waking up. On the 23 day, more than 600 volunteers and consumers are in the 29 cities of 10 countries and Adidas. Nike Outside the store, there was a flash action called "innocuous and cool" for the Guinness world record to express their determination to refuse toxic and harmful substances.
