    According to the US Department of Commerce, imports of textiles and clothing from China totaled $30 billion 433 million in 1~11 months in 2008, up 0.62% from the same period last year, accounting for 35.12% of the total imports of textiles and clothing from the United States.

    Overall, China's textile and apparel import market share has increased over the same period last year, but the import volume and market share of some products decreased year by year.

    237 categories (cotton or human fiber game), 300 types (cotton combed cotton yarn), 613 types (man made plain cloth), 645 types (men's sweater), 733 categories (silk men's suit jacket), 850 categories (silk and plant fiber skirts) and other six categories of products imports fell by more than 50% over the same period, of which 5 products market share dropped by more than 10 percentage points.

    Affected by the economic downturn, the US's demand for global textile and clothing imports is weak.

    In the 1~11 month of 2008, the United States imported 86 billion 656 million dollars of textiles and clothing from the world, down 3.27% from the same period last year. The import of most category products showed a negative growth trend.

    The above six categories of products from all over the world have shown a more serious atrophy.

    Among them, 237 categories of imports from the world decreased by 32.98% compared with the same period last year, 300 categories decreased by 33.15%, 613 categories dropped 46.59%, 645 categories dropped 38.58%, 733 decreased by 44.98%, and 850 classes dropped by 44.98%.

    Influenced by multiple factors such as rising cost of key elements, appreciation of RMB, international trade friction and the rise of textile industry in neighboring countries, China's textile and garment industry has become increasingly competitive in the international market, resulting in the loss or diversion of orders, resulting in a serious shrinkage of some of the market share of exports to the United States.

    In the 1~11 months of 2008, the market share of the 237 products imported from China decreased by 16.10 percentage points compared with the same period last year, while the market share of similar products imported from Guatemala increased by 6.96 percentage points from the same period last year. The market share of similar products imported from India and Philippines also increased by 2.61 and 2.51 percentage points respectively. During the same period, the market share of 645 products imported from the United States decreased by 10.30 percentage points, while the market share of similar products imported from Jordan increased by 9.26 percentage points, and the market share of such products imported from Mexico and Indonesia increased by 237 and 645 percentage points respectively.

    The above situation reflects that some of our textile and apparel products already do not have competitive advantages for US exports. If this momentum continues, more products may be faced with the risk of losing their international market share for many years.

    Therefore, on the one hand, China's textile and garment industry should actively increase the added value of products and adapt to the needs of the international market. On the other hand, it should extensively develop other market channels so as to diversify business risks.
