The spokesman for the Hongkong government, the census and Statistics Department of the government of Hongkong, released the latest retail Statistics yesterday. During the period, the total retail sales in Hongkong increased by 5.4% compared with the same period last year, and the total sales value reached HK $27 billion 500 million.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said that Hong Kong's retail industry should be further supported, and that the mainland residents' policy of visiting Hong Kong should be further relaxed.

According to the statistics of the census and Statistics Department, the total retail sales in January increased by 5.4% compared with the same period last year, and did not continue the decline in December 2008.

Among them, the largest increase came from footwear, related products and other clothing accessories, up 17.2%. However, several retail businesses such as automobiles, furniture, durable goods and so on all recorded falling data, of which vehicle sales fell by 36.3%.

A spokesman for the Hong Kong government said that the volume of retail sales increased by 17.8% in January 2008. The data in January 2009, compared with such a high base, still recorded growth, reflecting the fact that consumer sentiment in recent months remained quite stable in an unfavorable external environment.

He pointed out that the next short-term performance of retail business will continue to depend on the development of the financial tsunami and its impact on Hongkong.
