Take You To See The Private Space Of The Designer.
Alber Elbaz: eyes, mirrors and screens are all my design tools.
Alber Elbaz says his "black office" in Paris is the only place that makes him feel "bone and beautiful". Since 2001, Mr. Alber Elbaz, the creative director of Lanvin, has owned an office in Paris. What changes has taken place in his daily work? What did he put in the wardrobe of his office?
In this office, there is the feeling of being loved.
Q: how long have you been in this office?
A: for a year, but I have worked in Lanvin for 12 years. Before that, I used the offices in that building for assistants.
Q: then why did you decide to have an office?
A: Lanvin asked me to work together with an architect to design the new building. At first, I thought I had enough of a window and a table. But I wonder why I don't want an office. So I decided to have two tables, two windows and a small sofa, and only dark colored dark brown, dark grey, dark black or light black. I don't know why. I didn't deliberately define the color of the room, but these dark walls really made me feel really good. In this office, I have a feeling of being loved. The only thing I brought into the office was the photo, which shot a real orthodox wedding.
Q: is there any particular reason for picking up this picture?
A: many years ago, when I first became a designer of Yves Saint Laurent, I called my mother to tell her the good news. She just said, "Oh." So I asked, "don't you feel happy?" She said, "there is only one thing that makes me happy, that is, you can get married." So I bought this picture. It has a wedding and a bride in it. It looks sad. So when I walked into the office every day and looked at this picture, I could not help exclaiming, "thank God, I am not married."
Two working areas, one on the dining table and the other in front of the mirror.
Q: what do you usually do in your office?
A: the first thing is to put down my bag. I think it's very important for you to have a place to put your bag down and start a new day.
Q: So where did you put your bag?
A: I never put my bag on the floor because I am a little superstitious. I was told that if I put the money on the ground, I would lose money. Of course I like spending money, but I don't like to lose money. So I tried to put my bag on the back bench.
Q: what else do you do in this office?
A: I will interview someone here or have lunch. I am used to letting my team enjoy their time, and I enjoy my own here. I really need time to be alone. Because when people sit around, people always expect me to give answers, but sometimes I do not necessarily know. When employees leave or apply for promotion, I will meet them here. This is like my home. I come here from 9 in the morning (sometimes later than a quarter of an hour) and leave at 10 o'clock and 11 o'clock in the evening. But you can see my time in the office, and it probably takes more than half an hour in a day.
Q: where are you for the rest of the time?
A: we have two working areas: one is in front of the mirror and the other is on the table of Jeanne Lanvin. A long time ago, I saw this table in the shop, when there were several ties on the table. I always felt that I was working longer hours in the kitchen than in the living room and showroom. I thought at the time that it would be interesting to work at her table. So I asked, "can I have this table?"
As for the mirror, when I look at the design with my eyes and see through the mirror, most of the time the mirror tells me different from what the eyes tell me. So who should I listen to? Who should I trust? Then I would look at the pictures taken by my clothes on the model. I don't need a mirror at that time, but the computer screen will tell me another answer - eyes, mirrors and screens. Slowly, I came to the conclusion that the design that looks good on the screen does not feel good for the body.
Q: where did your desk come from?
A: This is also a table used by Jeanne Lanvin. We repaint it and fix it. I put a layer of glass on it to protect the table, because I always paint and paper on it, and I will eat here, sometimes splashing everywhere.
No Twitter, Instagram, no e-mail.
Q: do you work on computers?
Answer: No. Computers are used only when they show me pictures. I don't play Twitter or play Instagram. I don't have an e-mail, nor do I drive. I bought a cell phone because it looks really high-tech, but the only thing I do is to press the green key and the red key on the screen. I don't know how to use other functions.
Q: so did you put a whole stack of paper next to the computer?
Answer: those are my cards. I used to write some notes for you to record what I have to do and what I have done. Every day I start with my to-do list: who I must call, who I must talk to, what I have to say, what I have to check... Then one day, one by one, they should be crossed.
Q: do you have a special pen in your hand?
Answer: Mark pen, pencil, paint... You can use whatever you find. I am not the kind of person who has to use a particular pen or pen, or grasp it at a specific angle, which is not important to me. When I start designing a series, I will prepare a small book, record the text on it, and finish sketching sketch. Sometimes I wake up at 3 in the morning, then I can't sleep any more. I begin to worry about the success of this show. What should I do? Sometimes I feel at a loss, so I start to sketch, paint and change.
Q: what do you have in your wardrobe?
Answer: everything I don't want to see: paper, chocolate - 100% pure cocoa without Candles - candles, maybe some old sketches, photographs, blankets, yoga mats. Once I thought, wow, if only one yoga teacher could come from 6 to 7 every day. But she came here once and never came, but I kept this yoga mat.
Q: is your little book in this wardrobe too?
Answer: No. When the design of each season is completed, 3 to 4 days before the show, I will send the little book to someone who is important to me in the past one and a half months. I would also tell them, "this is probably the hardest gift I ever sent. Because this is part of me, part of my life. " I have to do that to start from scratch. I shed tears when I sent the book, but the tears would not fall, but I would spin in my eyes. And I always tell them, "if I need this book, I will bring them back." They will reply, "OK, we just keep them." They really did that. Then I can find another little book and start again.
Vera Wang: sanctuary, discos and mental hospital
Vera Wang said her private office was "shelters, discos and mental hospitals", giving her temporary relief from the enormous pressure of building brands on weekdays. In 2004, he released the first ready-made garment series and won the Designer Award and lifetime achievement award of the American Fashion Designers Association Awards (CFDA).
This is a place of love at first sight.
Q: how long have you been moving from the fashion district of New York?
A: almost three years ago. I moved to Madison square park because I like the light, the air and the scenery. In the fashion district for a long time, slowly began to feel depressed: many people, crowded streets, and now there are many factories, a large number of showrooms and designer studio crowded into a pile, occupied three or four blocks. So I thought, move to a spacious community. Now I love this place at first sight.
Q: what time did you spend to turn this place into your own home?
A: because it's a rented house, the way we use it is barbaric, moving everything in. In the old buildings, we had six floors, and everyone had to take the elevator and run up and down. Now we have a total of two floors, and the efficiency is high. Everyone has more chances to contact with each other.
Private space, avoid interference
Q: How did you separate your office from other offices?
A: This is my refuge. Out of the office is my design studio, Research Institute and library. I want a space that can get rid of the tension at that end - its style must be contemporary and Asian. To be fair, I am a minimalist in my heart, and this space embodies this point. It can help me calm down, think more clearly and play a role of relieving emotions.
Q: this room does not have a desk or a computer. Why?
Answer: no desk is deliberate. I hope to concentrate on making a very difficult phone call here, or to participate in a very complicated negotiation, which does not need a desk to complete. I don't use computers. I go everywhere to read with my iPad.
Q: who will come to this room?
Answer: no one. I put
