New Regulations Of OEKO-TEX 2019

In 2019, the OEKO-TEX Association aims to enhance consumer protection and the sustainable development of textile and leather value chains.

The existing standards of OEKO-TEX portfolio are revised and updated again at the beginning of this year.

The new regulations will come into force on April 1, 2019 after a three month pitional period.

Following is an overview of some important updates. All the new rules and updates can be viewed under the corresponding OEKO-TEX product of OEKO-TEX www.oeko-tex.com.

OEKO-TEX REACH has met the requirements of the new "appendix XVII CMR regulations".

Benzene and four amine salts have been included in the STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX by and LEATHER STANDARD by OEKO-TEX, and defined the limited value.

OEKO-TEX has been monitoring the quinoline since 2018 and has now set a limit value.

In the "standardization" requirement of the limited value requirement, < < requirement > is currently applicable to all limited values.

For the past 25 years, the strategy of OEKO-TEX is not to wait for legislation, but to play an active role in the field of consumer protection.

After the implementation of the above update, STANDARD 100 and LEATHER STANDARD have met the requirements of the new "REACH appendix XVII CMR regulations" (the European Commission regulations (EU) 2018/1513).

Since November 1, 2020, the regulations will only enforce 33 types of CMR products, carcinogenic, mutagenic and reproductive toxic substances.

In contrast, OEKO-TEX is far ahead, and it also involves a large number of other parameters related to consumer protection.

Limited value catalogue added

The new test items include a variety of substances of concern: siloxane D4, D5 and D6, and azo two formamide (ADCA).

In addition, requirements for extractable heavy metals barium and selenium are put forward.

In STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX OEKO-TEX Appendix 6, a more stringent limit is imposed on a variety of parameters.

These include the parameters of o-phthalic acid two (Plasticizer), alkylphenol and alkylphenol polyoxyethylene ether, and perfluorinated and polyfluorinated compounds.

The more stringent the requirements for residues in textile materials, the smaller their overall impact on the environment, workers and consumers.

Glyphosate monitored

In 2019, two new products were included in the monitoring area: glyphosate and its salts, as well as carcinogenic nitrosamines and nitroso compounds.

In particular, glyphosate products, the main components of herbicides, have attracted a lot of attention in the media in 2017 and 2018 and aroused heated debates all over the world.

At the end of 2017, under the protesting of different consumer groups and environmentalists, the EU temporarily extended the approval of glyphosate and other uses to 5 years.

Taking the "monitoring" action, the OEKO-TEX Association will pay more attention to the material group in the relevant textile materials and will analyze its situation in more detail.

Expanding product mix to achieve sustainable production conditions

In 2019, the STeP assessment will be extended to leather production plants.

In the process of integration, the name will also change: "sustainable textile production" will be changed to "Sustainable Textile and leather production" - abbreviated STeP will remain unchanged.
