Zara Announces That It Will Start From Seven Directions And Start A Comprehensive "Sustainable Fashion" In 2025.
In July 16th, Pablo Isla, the parent company of Zara and the chairman and CEO of Inditex, Spain's fast fashion giant, announced at the shareholders' meeting that it will continue to promote the strategy of sustainable development and plan to implement "sustainable fashion" in 2025. He said: "sustainable development is a difficult task. It requires everyone of Inditex to take part in it. We need to unite all the suppliers. We hope Inditex can become the leader of sustainable development in the industry."
Pablo Isla said that by 2025, Inditex will achieve 100% sustainability of raw materials, when all raw materials are organic, sustainable or recyclable cotton, flax and polyester fibers. At the same time, the proportion of renewable energy used in group activities in 2025 (including stores, logistics centers and offices) will be increased to 80%.
Before that, Inditex plans to achieve comprehensive and sustainable development from seven aspects: green buildings, energy-efficient stores, raw materials, green packaging, environmental protection clothing, old clothes recycling, waste recycling and reuse.
Green Building: all office buildings and offices in Inditex group will reach the highest green building certification standards in 2019.
Efficient and energy saving stores: all stores in Inditex's brand Zara will achieve high efficiency and energy saving standards in 2019; all brand stores in 2020 will achieve high efficiency and energy saving standards.
Raw materials: by 2023, organic cotton, linen, polyester fiber and viscose fiber will account for 90% of the total raw material procurement. At the same time, with the improvement of supply chain, viscose fiber will achieve 100% sustainability.
Green packaging: Inditex group's brands such as Zara, Zara Home, Massimo Dutti, Uterq u E have begun to reduce the use of plastic shopping bags. In 2018, the proportion of plastic bags used by Inditex group accounted for only 18% of total shopping bags. By 2020, all brands of Inditex group will no longer use plastic bags. By 2023, the disposable plastic products will be eliminated.
"Join Life (add to life)" environmental protection clothing series: "Join Life" series adopts more sustainable raw materials, such as organic cotton, recyclable polyester fiber and Tencel (Tencel) fiber, and priority to adopt multi water and energy friendly technology. In 2018, the clothing output of the "Join Life" series increased by 85% to 136 million over the same period. Inditex predicts that the clothing output of the "Join Life" series will grow by 110% in 2019, accounting for 25% of the total clothing of the group, and that one of every four pieces of clothing to be sold in 2020 will meet the sustainable development strategy standard.
Old clothes recycling: Inditex's old clothes recycling plan has covered 24 countries and regions in the world, and 1382 old clothes recycling boxes have been installed. Inditex has opened family home clothes recycling services in several cities in Spain and China, and has worked with charitable organizations, Hongkong's Caritas, to install 2000 old clothes recycling bins on the streets of Spain. At present, the old clothes recycling scheme has accumulated 34 thousand tons of shoes and accessories; Inditex plans to expand the household clothing recycling service to Paris, London and New York by September 2019. By 2020, all stores in Inditex will be equipped with old clothes recycling bins. At the same time, Inditex will also cooperate with Massachusetts Institute of Technology to invest $4 million to solve the difficulties and challenges faced by operation and sustainable development, and improve the clean technology of recycling and reuse of clothing fibers.
Waste recycling and recycling: at present, Inditex group has recovered or reused 88% of its waste from the group headquarters, logistics platform and shops. By 2023, Inditex will achieve 100% waste recovery or reuse. In addition, the group will also recycle all materials (mainly FSC certified cartons, recyclable and recyclable plastics, sirens and hangers) for packaging distribution and clothing suspension operations, so as to achieve internal reuse or recycling within the supply chain.
