A new British biotech entrepreneur is developing new textile dyeing technology, using bright colors of birds and butterflies as pigments, allowing microbes to reproduce bright colors on cloth, thereby reducing the use of large amounts of water and toxic chemicals during dyeing.

Colorifix, a new startup in Norwich, England, is supported by venture capital division of H&M, a Swedish fashion giant.

The general dyeing operation of synthetic pigments involves a large number of harmful chemicals, such as chromium or other heavy metal salts, which consume a lot of energy and water, and the resulting wastewater is a major source of pollution.

Colorifix said that the method used does not contain harmful substances, depending on the type of equipment, pigment and cloth, which can reduce up to 90% of water consumption, and is more common than ordinary dyeing operations at a lower temperature.
