Textiles In The EU'S Ecological Environment Pressure Has Been Listed As A High Priority.
Annual estimated production of clothing, footwear and home textiles for the European region will cause about 654 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions per capita in the EU.
According to the new release of the European Environmental Agency (EuropeanEnvironmentAgency), the annual consumption of raw materials for clothing, footwear and home textiles in the EU area is about 1.3 tons and the water consumption exceeds 100 cubic meters per year.
In its new content published in the European textile industry towards the development of circular economy (TextilesinEurope'scirculareconomy), we call for large-scale production and consumption of European textiles to develop in a circular economy. The aim is to reduce the EU's greenhouse gas emissions, resource use and pressure on the natural world.
The study points out that according to the technical report of the European Economic Zone (EuropeanEconomicArea), which specializes in the European waste and materials in the green economy thematic Center (EuropeanTopicCentreonWasteandMaterialsinaGreenEconomy), the production and processing of clothing, shoes and household textiles sold in the EU in 2017, each year uses about 1.3 tons of raw material and 104 cubic meters of water resources per person per year. About 85% materials and 92% water resources are used in other parts of the world.
For the consumption of water resources and the use of main raw materials, clothing, footwear and household textiles are the fourth largest consumption categories in the European Union, next only to food, housing and transportation. The report pointed out that the same product category is second only to food, resulting in second major pressures on land use. It also causes considerable pollution of chemicals and water resources, including water washing caused by ultrafine fiber release, resulting in water pollution and various negative social impacts.
It also indicates that the estimated annual per capita carbon dioxide emissions in Europe will be about 654 kilograms per year, which will make the textile related to private consumption the fifth largest source of carbon dioxide emissions. About 3/4 of these emissions occurred outside the European Union.
The EEA briefing pointed out that circular economy policies and principles, such as ecological design and reuse, have the potential to mitigate the impact of textile production and consumption on the environment and climate. At present, the EU policy requires Member States to carry out textile classification and recovery by 2025 and ensure that classified waste is not incinerated or buried.
According to EEA, textile recycling business models, such as leasing, sharing, recycling and resale, need to use policy support to expand the scale, and actively solve the problems of material design, production distribution, use and reuse, recycling and recycling. This can include policies such as sustainable production and product policy, ecological design and durability standards, green public procurement, safety and sustainable materials, waste prevention, extended producer responsibility, labeling and standards.
