Bangladesh Clothing Workers Threaten Hunger Strike

Sramik O Shilpa Rakkha Jatiya Mancha (GSSRJM), a clothing trade union alliance in Bangladesh, made their six request at a press conference in July 15th.

The organization will submit a memorandum to the Bangladesh garment manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) and Bangladesh knitting enterprises and Exporters Association (BKMEA) on 30 July and submit a memorandum to the labour adviser on 10 August.

Then, if their request is not answered, they plan to hold a hunger strike in August 31st.

In fact, if workers' demands can not be immediately satisfied, they decide to incite chaos.

One of their main requests to the government is to raise their monthly wages from the current 1662.50 Taka to 4500 Tucca.

Their six requirements include: substantially reducing the prices of daily necessities, implementing the necessary material rationing system for workers, setting up a Wage Commission immediately, holding a dialogue with workers, revoking false cases against workers, stopping the factory's illegal termination of workers' work, redefining the trade union's activity rights, lifting the emergency situation, overthrowing the illegal building BGMEA building, and punishing the government officials who approve the illegal building plan.

Recently, a large number of workers have not received their wages for several months, and now their bosses even do their best to stop their work.

Workers face such a sad situation, therefore, the labor union organized a wide range of protest against unfair treatment demonstrations is the right decision.
