Global Celebrities Talk About The Expo (Thirty-Two)
To achieve a better life in the city depends on "material", such as the basic living needs of the citizens. It also depends on "spirit", cultivating a sense of place, belonging and common thinking in people's hearts to jointly promote urban progress.
This theme coincides with the theme of "Better City, better life" in World Expo, Shanghai.
Participation in such a grand event in World Expo will also benefit the United Nations family.
Anna, executive director of UN Habitat, Anna, Tanzania, is now the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations and executive director of UN Habitat.
The highest African women in the United Nations system today.
On this unprecedented world gathering, I would like to extend my congratulations to Shanghai, the International Exhibition Bureau and the Chinese government and feel honored and pleased to be invited to write this article.
In 2010, World Expo put forward an opportune theme, "Better City, better life".
As we all know, at present, more than half of the world's population lives in cities, and the earth on which we live is increasingly urbanized.
The acceleration of urbanization brings many challenges, and also attracts our attention to many problems: more and more slums, threats caused by climate warming and serious soil erosion.
As a department responsible for urban development under the framework of the United Nations, UN Habitat has been committed to improving the lives of urban residents around the world since its establishment in 1978.
According to UN Habitat, to achieve a better life in the city depends on two aspects: meeting the basic living needs of the citizens, such as water, sanitation and housing, and more of enriching and pleasing the public in spirit, especially in the social, cultural and historical fields.
In our view, it is no less important to cultivate a sense of place, a sense of belonging and a common mind in the minds of people than to enable everyone to have basic living conditions.
The establishment of a beautiful city and the consistency of its objectives are also important, namely, local governments, private enterprises and urban residents have to understand what is the greatest predicament of urban development.
People can only truly regard themselves as the masters of the city and feel proud of their achievements, so that the city can really achieve sustainable development.
Without the care and devotion of everyone, the city will not thrive and thrive, nor will it inspire all its internal potentials and become a place for social harmony, participation among the whole people, economic development and environmental ideals.
It is no coincidence that Shanghai, the host city of World Expo in 2010, itself is a rapidly developing central city.
In addition to the amazing speed of development, Shanghai has set an example for promoting "urbanization", "how to get rid of economic growth and exclude all other circles" in order to promote universal justice and opportunity sharing.
We are deeply honored that UN Habitat has been authorized to coordinate UN agencies in World Expo in 2010.
We are well aware of the enormous challenges and risks of this task.
At the same time, we also realize that participation in such a grand event like World Expo will benefit the great family of the United Nations.
Similarly, we sincerely hope that the UN's understanding of the city, as demonstrated in our theme pavilion "one earth, one United Nations", can promote more international dialogue on urban development and promote our common goal of global sustainability and fairness.
