Raffles tracing

Thomas Standford Sir Thomas Stamford Bingley Raffles, July 6, 1781 to July 5, 1826, was an important politician in the British colonial era.

His main contributions include the establishment of Singapore as an international port between Europe and Asia.

In January 29, 1819, on the island at the southern tip of the Malaya Peninsula, sir Thomas Standford Raffles established a free trade port, today's Singapore.

On the same day, he announced that East India Company had obtained the right to govern Singapore from Sultan. In fact, the right to govern was not completely legal: at that time, legitimate Sultan did not agree with Raffles's request. Raffles only acquired Singapore after overthrowing the Sultan and establishing Sultan's brother as the nominal ruler.

Raffles became governor of Singapore until he left in 1823 and returned to London.

He was the first president of the Zoological Society of London and was named Sir in 1817.

In 1826, Sir George Raffles died in London at the age of forty-five.
