Children's clothing was found to contain biodegradable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes. A total of 200 kinds of children's and infants' clothing products produced by 200 enterprises in 9 provinces and municipalities directly under the Central Government of Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Shanghai, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong and Guangdong were sampled.

The AQSIQ inspected 10 items including fiber composition and content, formaldehyde content, pH value, color fastness to water, color fastness to dry rubbing, color fastness to wet rubbing, color fastness to perspiration, color fastness to saliva, color fastness to washing, and decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes in accordance with the requirements of the National Technical Code for Basic Safety of Textile Products GB18401 and other standards.

The spot check found that 26 products were unqualified, involving fiber composition and content, pH value, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes, and color fastness to wet rubbing. The products produced by 6 Zhejiang manufacturers are involved.

Experts said that over standard decomposable and carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes are called invisible killers hidden in clothes. They are insoluble in water, colorless and tasteless, and have a high risk of cancer. The National Basic Safety Technical Specifications for Textile Products clearly stipulates that carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes are prohibited.
