He experienced the golden age of traditional textile and clothing in Hongkong, and saw that the industry was in decline. However, he still did not recognize the "sunset industry" in this population.
"There is market demand and talent resources, and there is a solid foundation for industry. How can we not have to do it?" Felix is confident both in theory and in practice. He stressed that it must be pformed from traditional textile and garment industry to fashion industry. After all, the flow of local production lines has greatly reduced the competitiveness of the industry, so we should pay more attention to the development of attractiveness.
Attractiveness drives competitiveness
From 1950 to 1980, manufacturing industry was the main pillar of Hongkong's economy, including the textile industry, and its garment exports ranked first in many years.
Although the traditional textile industry is on the decline, Hongkong is still the world's second largest garment exporter next to the mainland. And with many years of solid industry foundation, Hongkong, as the global sourcing hub for clothing in Asia, has been buying international trade companies and large retailers such as Macy's, C&A, Carrefour, and international advanced designer brands, such as CK, RalphLauren and YSL, to purchase garments in Hongkong through their purchasing offices or intermediaries.
Felix said that market demand and industry foundation are part of attraction, and more importantly, talent.
Experienced fashion designers in Hongkong, whether trained locally, or have returned to Hong Kong for further education, possess professional knowledge and skills, as well as keen trend feelers. They are better at integrating business and innovation.
In February of this year, three Hongkong designers Huang Ziwei, Wu Junqi and He Shanheng were invited to show the 2016 autumn winter fashion series at the Hongkong fashion show in New York fashion week.
In addition, many famous foreign department stores, such as Bloomingdale's, C&A, Harrod's and Macy's, all have or have sold the high-end brand clothing of Hongkong designers.
