Louise Glick, Winner Of The Nobel Prize For Literature In 2020: Writing Life Trauma As A Poem Of Silence
The 2020 Nobel Prize for literature was officially announced on October 8, and Louise GL ü CK, an American poet, won the prize. The simple beauty created by her precise poetic language makes the individual existence universal. Louise Glick published her first child in 1968, and has become one of the most outstanding poets in contemporary American literature.
Louise GL ü CK was born on April 22, 1943 in a Hungarian Jewish family on Long Island, New York. Since the publication of the first born son in 1968, twelve anthologies of poetry and two collections of poetics have been published, winning various poetry awards, including the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award, the National Book Critics Award, the Wallace Stevens award of the American Academy of poets, and the paulingen prize. As the old saying confirms: "every great poet must have had a very painful and cruel life." With Gretchen, almost with death.
Louise Glick grew up in a family full of literary and artistic atmosphere. In an interview, she recalled that when she was a child, her grandmother often carried a collection of poems with her. She also remembered that she had read William Blake's poem the little black when she was four or five years old From a young age, her parents encouraged her to write, and they even printed out her poems for comment. In her essay education of the poem, she said that in her childhood, she regarded herself as a descendant of William Blake, Yeats, Keats and Eliot. Growing up in such a family advocating intellectual activities and artistic creation, Louise Glick should have had a happy childhood with free development talent, but it was not the case. When Glick was born, it was not the joy and expectation of her family to greet her. Seven days before she was born, her sister, her parents' first child, died, a tragedy that dealt a heavy blow to the whole family. Although Glick had a younger sister after her, the trauma became a cloud that could not be dispelled for many years.
On the other hand, it's far from easy to grow up in a family where children are expected to succeed. In poetry education, Glick says that she comes from a noisy family. Every family member has a strong desire to express herself and is keen to finish speaking for others. Therefore, her whole childhood and adolescence are striving for her voice to be heard. Her mother Beatrice had a good education and graduated from Wesley women's college, where many famous women were born. She was a literary lover and a loyal reader. However, the relationship between her mother and daughter was very tense in her childhood and adolescence. She called her mother like a "judge", always examining and exploring the literary and artistic potential of their sisters. "If we hum or two, we have to go to music class, and dance class will come.". In that interview in 2012, she said: "my mother does love art, but I don't think her insight and taste are so outstanding."
His father, Daniel Glick, dreamed of becoming a writer when he was young. Although he eventually devoted himself to the business world, he still kept his passion for literature and art. His eloquence is very good. He is good at oral adaptation of various legends and historical anecdotes. What he loves most is repeatedly preaching how Joan of arc tempered his mind with extraordinary perseverance. These stories had a profound impact on Glick. In high school, she followed the ascetic practice of Joan of arc and carried out a strict diet for a long time. Eventually, she suffered from anorexia and had to drop out of school for psychoanalysis. Although anorexia has seriously damaged her body and mind, she still takes a positive view in the future. She said: "suffering from anorexia is an important experience for me. The sense of hunger helps me control my greed and helps me to gain an independent self."
The year after she dropped out of high school, in 1962, she entered Sarah Lawrence College, but soon dropped out. In 1963, she entered Columbia University and studied in the poetry class of leonoe Adams, a famous poet and American poet laureate of 1948-1949. Two years later, she met a teacher who had a decisive influence on her poetry, the famous poet Stanley Kunitz, who won the title of American poet laureate in 2000. Under the influence of Stanley Kunitz, Glick's character has changed greatly, from being arrogant to being modest and restrained.
Death and loss are not only the experiences in her personal life, but also the constant themes in her works. In 1980, her hut in Vermont was burned down in a fire. In 1985, she was hit by death again - her father died. In an essay she wrote this year, she said that she was a "dreamer and viewer" and an author of "indulging in loss." she had been waiting for 20 years to endure the inevitable loss. Both Ararat (published in 1990) and the Wild Iris (1992) have works of mourning for their father. Wild Iris won the Pulitzer Prize for poetry in 1993, which pushed the poet's reputation to a new height. This collection of poems has always been Glick's most peculiar and widely circulated works.
Glick had two marriages. In 1967, she married a young medical student, Charles Hertz, Jr., and had a son, but soon they divorced. In 1977, he remarried, and the object of the marriage, John drano, was also a writer. Although they still ended up in divorce, Glick seemed to be very concerned about and attached to this marriage, and marriage became a recurring theme in many subsequent poetry anthologies. Meadowlands, published in 1996, uses the story of Odyssey to describe a failed marriage; Vita nova in 1999 and the seven in 2001 Ages expresses the change after a marriage with a more optimistic tone, and occasionally a bright color flows out between the lines, which is rare in her poems.
During this period, Glick's technique became more and more mature. His poems can be called the sounds of nature, or can be said to be silent poems. The thinking about the world in his poems is rich in metaphysical speculation, but also vivid and vivid, which makes people love it. On August 28, 2003, Louise Glick was awarded the title of American poet laureate by the library of Congress. As the 12th poet to receive this honor, she, together with Robert pan Warren, Joseph brotsky and Robert Haas, represented the highest achievements of contemporary American poetry.
