Ma Yun: Even If You Kneel, You Need To Survive.
The Internet industry is a changing place. This summer's rivers and lakes undoubtedly belong to Baidu CEO Robin Li and Alibaba, Taobao CEO Ma Yun.
Under the leadership of Robin Li, Baidu successfully landed in the US NASDAQ in August 5th and re interpreted the myth of the Internet becoming rich overnight. Ma and his team in August 11th will be the global Internet leader YAHOO in China's entire business income capsule.
If we say Baidu's listing is long expected, it is only a matter of time and price and so on. While the "Crazy" Ma Yun has been playing the same style as he always does, the sword has been taking the lead. It has always done amazing things when people are still surprised.
He once said, "in the bad days of the Internet, Ma Yun, who can survive even if he is kneeling or winning, can now stand tall and head on his own stage."
In August 11th, at the signing ceremony of Alibaba's acquisition of YAHOO China, Ma Yun's smiling face was gripped by his hands tightly with YAHOO's global CEO Rosen, and he calmly faced many multimedia flash lights.
Ma Yun, who likes martial arts novels, has found the mood of being at the top of Huashan.
Ma Yun's favorite martial arts character is "Qingjiang Hu" in the qingqingyang, no strokes, wins and strokes.
Instead of following the conventional sword, the sword moves sideways. Such people usually have a strong idealistic complex, but also a wise and ruthless character who is willing to fight in real life.
Ma Yun, who was awarded the award at the 2004 China economic year, said that the reason why Alibaba can achieve "finding a match with binoculars" is because the Alibaba can still kneel and live in the most painful time.
There is some arrogance in the words, but this is Ma Yun's character: the language is astonishing.
In the Internet industry, where paranoia can survive, it is common for Ma Yun to "never say die".
What is important is that Ma has a crazy capital.
The arrogance of ignorance is the arrogance of ignorance, and the arrogance of self-confidence. Ma Yun is obviously deep in the essence of the latter and full of madness.
In the Internet industry, it is not surprising that a person is successful in a website. Who can succeed in the Alibaba like Ma Yun and bring the rising star Taobao to the top of the industry?
An Internet veteran praised Ma Yun.
In 1999, he returned to West Lake, Hangzhou, where Ma Yun founded Alibaba, the world's most recognized B2B website. Ma firmly believed that the B2B mode will eventually change the way of business of tens of millions of businessmen around the world, thereby changing the lives of billions of people around the world.
Ma Yun has succeeded, and Alibaba has brought Ma Yun's status and income to the Internet today, even though Ma Yun has millions of dollars in his sleep every day.
According to internal information, Alibaba's sales volume in 2004 was $46 million, and sales in 2005 were expected to reach US $100 million.
Alibaba has created a miracle. The international Internet community is developing its mode of development with YAHOO portal mode, Amazon B2C mode and Ebay C2C mode. It is called the "Internet fourth mode".
In 2000, Sun Zhengyi, chairman of the Softbank Corp of Japan, decided to invest $20 million in Alibaba after 6 minutes' interview with Ma Yun.
"If you really want to become an international company, we can only call you Peanut (peanuts) when the turnover of US $one hundred million has not been achieved," he said.
The crazy Ma Yun is very sober: "China's e-commerce itself is very, very young, and we are a little better in the young."
Ma Yun wants to do more than that. In September 2003, Ma Yun invested 100 million yuan to build C2C network trading platform, Taobao. "In the next 3 to 5 years, we will do a lot of things in China's e-commerce. We want to wake up the industry."
Ma Yun said.
Ma Yun succeeded again.
According to the statistics released by Taobao, in the first quarter of 2005, the amount of commodity trading exceeded 1 billion yuan, and the C2C website in China was just ahead of its rivals, leaving the rest of its competitors far behind.
At the 2004 annual economic prize presentation ceremony, Ma Yun gave the classic sentence: "I can't find my opponent with binoculars."
However, people often forget the latter part of the sentence, that is, "looking for their defects with a microscope", born in hardship, died in peace and happiness, a crazy person has such a strong sense of hardship, which is a nightmare for his opponent.
Agam, the Internet industry, and Ma Yun's experience, like his personality, will not connect the man and the Internet elite at the same time.
Ma Yun said: "I seldom feel that I am an elite, sometimes wearing a suit is also unpleasant.
My computer knowledge is limited, I don't know IT and I don't know websites.
I have a motto called "never give up. I think if everyone can do that, 80% people like me can succeed."
"I am a silly child since I was a child. I am stupid when I am a fool. My brain is so small that I can only think about it one by one. If you ask three questions, I will not digest it."
From childhood, Ma Yun's homework was bad, and mathematics once scored 1 points.
"As simple as Agam."
In 1984, Ma was admitted to Hangzhou Normal University and studied foreign languages.
After graduating from University, Ma Yun taught English at Hangzhou Insitute of Electronic and Technology.
In 1991, Ma Yun and his friends set up Haibo plation agency, carrying big bags to Yiwu to pour small gifts, flowers and so on. Ma Yun supported the plation club and organized the first English corner in Hangzhou.
1995 is a turning point in Ma's life course.
That year, Ma Yun, aged 30, was the ten outstanding young teacher in Hangzhou. The principal promised his position as a foreign director, but Ma abandoned it.
In April of the same year, Ma Yun set up China's yellow pages Internet Co, becoming one of the earliest Internet Co in China. It was one of the few money making Internet Co Ma Yun earned 5 million yuan in third years.
In 1997, at the invitation of the Ministry of trade and economic cooperation, Ma Yun set up the MOFTEC website of the China International Business Center of the Ministry of Commerce and trade. After a year, Ma decided to leave, because a bigger dream was born in Ma Yun's mind.
In February 1999, Ma went to Singapore to attend the Asian e-commerce conference. He found that the discussion was about e-commerce in Asia. 85% of the speakers were Americans, all of whom were Ebay and Amazon.
He suddenly jumped out of an idea that Asia should have its own mode and China should have its own model.
The e-commerce market in Europe and America, especially the B2B mode, is aimed at large enterprises. The e-commerce market in Asia is mainly in small and medium-sized enterprises, and the two markets can not be used in the same way.
Ma Yun decided to start a model that China can't find without the United States.
In March 1999, Ma Yun quietly returned to his hometown in Hangzhou, and set up a camp in West Lake.
Why did he go back to his hometown?
Ma Yun's answer is, "back to Hangzhou, in order to avoid all the interference, we do not need to hype, need to do practical things, everyone is doing the bubble, we have to do solid things, and the other is feel too tired in Beijing, need to go home to change the environment."
Another astute consideration of Ma Yun is that Hangzhou is relatively cheap because it is far away from the IT centers in Beijing and Shenzhen.
Ma Yun is different from all electronic commerce at that time. He does not do the business of those 15% big enterprises, but only does 85% small and medium-sized businesses.
In the words of Ma Yun, "catch shrimps only."
Very simple, big enterprises have their own special channels of information, huge advertising fees, and small businesses have nothing. They are the ones who need the Internet most.
What Ma Yun wants to do is to provide such a world and gather the import and export information of small and medium-sized enterprises around the world.
"Small businesses are like stones on the beach, but they can be glued together through the Internet, and the stones that are glued together with clay can be powerful.
You can contend with big stones.
And the characteristics of the Internet economy is to fight big and slow.
But Ma Yun is also facing great challenges. This is what Ma Yun often used to warn his subordinates. "My mother has bought a thing on a tricycle. Why should I click on the website to buy something?"
Fortunately, Alibaba has been welcomed. Ma Yun has caught the focus of businessmen's concern: buying and selling, easy to use, and finding the information to buy and sell.
Alibaba did not earn a penny of money, and successively gained $5 million from Goldman Sachs and $20 million from Japan's Softbank.
In the current economic world, big businesses are whale, and big businesses are living on shrimp.
The shrimp also rely on the leftovers of the big whale to earn their living.
The Internet world is a personalized and independent world. Small businesses form an independent world through the Internet, and products are more colorful. This is the real revolution of the Internet.
To achieve this goal, Ma Yun's Alibaba website must be based around the world, otherwise Alibaba will become a seller without a buyer.
And Alibaba must quickly cover the globe, otherwise losing the first will lose its meaning.
Ma Yun had no way out.
He can only run forward like Agam.
The Internet is a fickle industry. In the short message and game trend, Ma Yun is still unmoved. He still sticks to his B2B position and insists on running forward. In the process of running forward, Ma Yun has created Taobao net conveniently, and has completed the acquisition of YAHOO China business.
Is it possible for Ma Yun to succeed this time?
"YAHOO sells Chinese business to Ma Yun and adds $1 billion to its partners," he said.
From the press conference, it must be that the question mark is more than the answer.
CEO, Xie Wen, evaluates Ma Yun's acquisition.
Mr Ma's biggest problem now is the integration of what is the core.
Ma Yun has almost lost all his company's functions now. If Ma Yun goes on for a long time without looking for more experienced people in the industry, Xie Wen said, "I guess he will integrate in the direction of e-commerce."
Ma Yun said that the combination of e-commerce and search is a mode approved by the industry. In addition to search, YAHOO China also has e-mail, portals, instant messaging and other businesses, many of which are strategic products of the future, and acquisitions are not just for today's sake. Everything should be a goal for two or three years.
"In fact, many businesses in YAHOO China are complementary to Alibaba's business," he said.
Alibaba should provide excellent service for enterprise mail to customers. At the same time, e-mail and instant messaging can be perfectly integrated with trade and Alipay.
At present, Alibaba trade Tong has more than 160 thousand online users, which is a perfect combination with YAHOO. Wireless service is also the direction of business development in the future.
"Alibaba CEO Ma Yun and its team are China's best Internet management team," he said.
YAHOO founder Yang Zhiyuan commented on his acquisition partner and future partner.
Yang Zhiyuan believes that Alibaba and YAHOO China may be the most unique capital combination.
"We merged YAHOO's locally ranked second search and e-mail business with Alibaba's leading consumer auction platform, B2B business and Alipay payment platform."
It will be the only enterprise in China that has business, search and communication business as well as a very strong local management team. This will become a very valuable franchise mode.
This will push Ma to a new height, but the new height is also a new challenge and a bigger challenge.
Liu Benfu, an Internet expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, said: "the challenge that Alibaba is facing now is whether it can manage well the business involving many different fields."
In response to this, Ma Yun replied that his focus and foresight would make some things happen.
He said that when eBay promised to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in China, he foresaw that YAHOO would "play its cards" in China and change its game structure.
After merging, it will invest larger funds in search and e-commerce.
The development of e-commerce in China is facing a bottleneck. By the end of 2004, China's Internet users had reached a huge 94 million. However, e-commerce has been faced with three bottlenecks, credit, payment and logistics.
If we do not first solve the problem of "safe payment" on the Internet, China's e-commerce
