Nandu: what did you do when you took the film?
Lu Chuan: we have been involved in the creation of the World Expo Pavilion since August 2008.
At that time, a lot of people were invited to the theme interpretation department. I was a judge of the imaging department, and I reviewed these plans together with experts from various sectors such as city and architecture.
Later, the leaders of the World Expo Bureau talked to me and asked if I had any wish to make a movie for the National Pavilion.
I had two emotions at that time.

"I'm very tired, and I don't want to take a particularly tiring thing.
When I was doing the review, I saw some teams being poor and being sent back again and again.
I thought, judging from the referee turned into a player, the fate is the same, and later experience has proved my prediction.
In addition, I feel that cooperation with the state will certainly not become a personal creation, and will inevitably polish out some personalized things.
Nandu: has there been any experience of taking similar theme films before?
Lu Chuan: Yes, too.
In 2007, a promotional film was taken for the Special Olympics, but that was relatively simple.
This time, there are many national interests, national expressions and national achievements.
I was really hesitant at that time.
We all know what happened to other directors. They are all very worried. I wonder if I can carry it down.
But there is another factor that makes us want to make this film.
Because of the state-level image representation, we have never found our generation. (Note: the sixth generation directors generally refer to the directors of Beijing Film Academy in the middle and late 80s of last century, and a group of young directors who started directing films after 90s).
When we look at these works, we feel that they do not represent our hearts, nor do we represent our views on the country, the nation, the people and history.
So this time I really want to do something new.
Nandu: it is also an opportunity.
Lu Chuan: it is also a great difficulty and an opportunity.
This opportunity is not only for myself, but also for us to produce a narrative to the world, which is different from human nature and is closely related to human nature.
Not only is it about a grand achievement, it is also about the changes of Chinese people and the changes of people.
Nandu: so you decided to accept this challenge?
Lu Chuan: I have to go to the seven sieve eight election and have to go into it.
I was the last to win the match.
I know there are seven or eight teams competing together.
Wenchuan earthquake passes through disaster
Nandu: in fact, it is still very difficult. In a very short time, it is necessary to express a grand theme and express the concern you want to express.
How did you find this balance?
Lu Chuan: at first, I didn't want to make it as it used to be. It was all big smiles and laughter. The way of filming was almost unified.
You know, almost every TV station is a type of shooting.
Later, we said that this time we must shoot specific people, not only high spirited, but also to take pictures of their anxieties and things that go through disasters.
So this time we actually have a family of four generations in the plot design, from father, son, grandson, grandson, their 30 years of experience, the lens alignment them.
The journey of their family is a Chinese course.
Nandu: is it a way to tell the changes of the times through the change of a family?
Lu Chuan: but it's not a real record.
If you say this, you may feel that this is a small film, which is very mild.
Actually, no, we just made a very grand picture.
As soon as we arrived, tens of thousands of people ran away. The father and son said goodbye, and the children ran in the wilderness.
People from different nationalities gather together, in fact, it is a poetic display. At last, they meet again in the city. I find it very touching.
It has many allegorical things. We left the countryside and left our fathers on the land.
It is a difference. We have parents' eyes and expectations behind us.
We go forward, and finally, today, we will meet again.
This is a return.
We have shown the highest ideals of the four generations, the most valued family in China.
Our efforts will satisfy you.
At least this time is different from what it used to be. Of course, not everyone can accept it.
Nandu: are you satisfied with yourself?
Lu Chuan: I think it's OK.
It certainly is not a 100% character creation.
But we do all we can to express our individuality in the existing space and to the Chinese people in the past 30 years, not only in material growth but also in spiritual growth.
We even showed disaster in it.
This is very difficult. It has never been possible before.
In the national image display, you take a disaster.
But this time we took a very special technique to take the Wenchuan earthquake.
We want to take a generation of young people, after 80, it is actually a generation of people who grew up after the Wenchuan earthquake.
In fact, we also have the ability to shoulder the prosperity of a nation and go through disasters.
Rebuild cities and countries.
So in order to keep this paragraph, we did PK.
This is the biggest difference between us and previous films.
We must shoot the hardships of the Chinese people.
China's 30 years are not going smoothly. The harmonious society has come this way. In the past 30 years, it has gone through too many hardships. China is also a country with many disasters.
Nandu: is this what you want to express?
Lu Chuan: I think this is just a compliment to our nation, and it can still stand there through disaster.
I will feel that the nation that can not face disaster is not a strong nation.
This is our riveting.
We did give up some things.
Too individualized and unique, we may give up.
But today we think we are right.
Let the world see our resilience.
The process of filming is the common search.
Nandu: will this expression be different from the theme of "Better City, better life"?
Lu Chuan: but you know, Wenchuan is a city's destruction.
But it is also the regeneration of a city.
It concentrates the spirit of regeneration.
In fact, as the largest urbanization movement in history, China's urbanization movement has a concentrated and special performance in Wenchuan.
It also proves that Chinese people will not be overthrown by any difficulties.
So the city makes life better.
Our topic is called beauty.
The English plation is the roadto our beautiful life.
There must have been many frustrations in remembering a road leading to a better life.
Such frustrations can also reflect the beauty of our modern life.

Nandu: in the process of filming, will you use some of the techniques of expression to conflict with the organizers?
For example, would they prefer to highlight the scientific development and the progress of the city?
Is there such a situation?
Lu Chuan: there must be.
It is the so-called performance.
But in my opinion, the leaders of the World Expo Bureau are very tolerant to me.
I once said, if you invite a donkey, you can't let him learn parrots.
It is true that the voice I can make is like this, but it is also responsible for the nation and nation. You must make sure that I learn parrot calls with my voice. This is not what I can do.
In my life shot, I do not want this movie in World Expo to become another thing.
It should have my consistent pursuit in it.
There may be compromises, but core values can not be changed.
I must not give up my respect for and display of human nature.
To shoot the city, to make changes in the city, originally used tap water and later bottled water.
Yes, but it is not the core of the 30 years.
I think 30 years is actually a kind of heritage.
Nandu: you don't want to be trivial?
Lu Chuan: in eight minutes, you can't cover everything.
We can not fully display.
But as director, I have the most important things.
Nandu: at the beginning of the shooting, can we fully communicate well, can you shoot according to your imagination?
Lu Chuan: No, it should be a common search.
Not only the leaders of the World Expo Bureau, but also the leaders of Shanghai and the leaders at higher levels.
For example, our experience was launched in September 1st last year.
At that time, all the contracts were signed, and all the preparations were finished. Suddenly, a telephone call came to a halt. After three or four days, the plan was overturned.
It has to be done again.
This is rather extreme, but something like this has happened.
This is what I was worried about in the middle of the national project.
It is not expected.
But I think at least the leaders of the Shanghai World Expo Bureau, including the leaders of Shanghai, are relatively liberal and quite able to listen to our views.
Sometimes there are different opinions.
They may be more responsible than we are.
We also try to make them acceptable.
But we also hope that the expression of core values will not be lost. This is a very difficult and tangled process.
There are at least two or three places that I find very touching.
Nandu: I heard that the film must be finished before the end of the year.
Lu Chuan: to go through many reviews, the censorship of script is going to the top.
We can't start the machine.
The last draft was launched in January.
This is very crumble.
So we went to the new year to kill thirty.
The Spring Festival has not been over, and the staff have been working hard.
Now the first draft is cut out.
I don't think it's a real job.
Some things are very interesting.
I don't think it's a shame either.
The only standard I take is not to lose face.
After I finished reading, I felt not ashamed and touching.
We went to see the film and watched with hundreds of staff members of the Shanghai World Expo Bureau. They also felt moving.
So I feel more confident.
Nandu: We observed that there was a strong documentary style in your previous movie. Will this film continue?
Lu Chuan: it may be different. The power, speed and impact of the style will be maintained.
But it will still be more poetic and sunny.
Nandu: is there anything you wish to express but missed?
Lu Chuan: I think this is an emotional expression.
After more than a year of thinking, the script is revised and republished. Once a week, he goes to Shanghai two times, revises, meets and listens to experts' opinions. This situation has lasted for more than six months.
The actual time to do the movie is less than half a year.
Anyway, every time I do a movie, I try my best. There is regret and no way out.
Nandu: the process is very cumbersome.
Lu Chuan: it's very abrasive.
Several times in the middle, I felt that I could not keep up.
Later I thought I would be shot down.
At that time, there were many other teams in PK.
But I still feel this way. I think there is still considerable strength.
We let the leaders of the World Expo Bureau see our abilities and sincerity.
Nandu: sounds like you still have great hopes for this movie?
Lu Chuan: there is truth in it.
Really, to this day.
I can assure future audiences that there is truth in it.
This is hard to do.
But we did it.
Nandu: has this truth touched you?
Lu Chuan: Yes, there are at least two or three places.
I find it very touching.
Eight minutes, two or three, (laughs), okay.
Indeed, our film is a collective decision.
Nandu: do you think you give up much?
Lu Chuan: one hundred and twenty draft scripts, there are different things, so I can not remember, which gave up, and some secretly picked up.
I think we are doing our best to do something that is worthy of our conscience, not something that is empty.
In this case, I feel that no matter what the future evaluation is, we have done our best.
We pushed the door to the limit.
