Nike Honduras Customs Factory "Labor Rights" Dispute Ended

A wide range of agreements was signed with Honduras trade unionists to settle disputes over the rights and interests of subcontractors.

Nike has recently been criticized for the fact that two contractors in Central America, Hugger and VisionTex were suspected to have closed their factories and did not provide severance payment for workers. It is estimated that 1800 workers were injured and the total severance payments amounted to about $2 million.

To protest the situation, University of Washington and Wisconsin University terminated the authorized paction between Nike and the students. They also carried out a consistent protest campaign with the slogan "you pay it!" (Justpayit!).

The CGT trade union has announced $1 million 500 thousand to assist the expelled workers, which is jointly managed by CGT, Solidarity Union (SolidarityCenter) and workers' rights groups, and supervised by LanceCompa professor of Cornell University.

Nike will also provide vocational training programs and give priority to hiring affected workers in the next 2 years, and will provide at least one year of health care through the Honduras social insurance agency (IHSS) unless they find new jobs.

In the joint statement, Nike and CGT said they were very happy to solve the problem, and they promised to find a long-term sustainable way to provide social protection for workers when they were unemployed.

The University of Wisconsin expressed gratifying results on the development of events and said that it would help the school renew its contract with Nike.

The school believes that the act of Nike is not only a manifestation of responsibility for subcontractors' violations, but also provides a way to deal with similar situations in the future.
