    Charlie Ross: what is the development direction of Alibaba in the future?


    Ma Yun: continue to focus on the development of e-commerce, small and medium enterprises and customer market. China's e-commerce infrastructure is not ideal. In fact, this is a reason with the mobile phone more than 10 years ago. Today's e-commerce is also facing the same situation. I think we have become the mainstay of China's e-commerce.     Ma Yun: not technology, but culture! Technology is just a tool. We value value, mission and vision. Work is to help others, not to make money. In my company, customers are the first, employees second, shareholders third, that is our belief. I remember before listing, many people said to me: "Ma Yun, to maintain the upward trend of share prices, we are major shareholders." And when the crisis came, these people ran away, but my employees left behind, and customers left behind, which is the importance of corporate culture.


    Charlie Ross: now you have the capital and strength to look at the global market, will you try it?


    Ma Yun: it's hard to say. I can only say that we have achieved success in China, but as long as there are small and medium-sized enterprises, we can do that. I firmly believe that in twenty-first Century, "small is beautiful". Therefore, as long as there are small and medium-sized enterprises, there will be us.


    Charlie Ross: Well, can you understand this? When WAL-MART started, it focused on small towns, and WAL-MART was built by serving customers in small towns instead of starting in big cities.


    Ma Yun: that's right. I've seen shrimp get rich. I've never seen sharks and whale get rich. So it's important to have dreams.


    Charlie Ross: because of this, you already have a very successful business. What other dreams do you have?


    Ma Yun: I will devote more time to encourage people to start businesses, help more small and medium enterprises and entrepreneurs, and I also want to go to school to give lectures. In most business schools, professors teach how to earn money and how to manage enterprises. But what I want to tell you is that if you want to run businesses, first of all, you need to provide value, serve others and help each other. That's the key.     Charlie Ross: what do you think is the best resource in China?


    Ma: the wisdom of the 1 billion 300 million! If we can develop their wisdom, then we will get countless innovations. This is our best resource! The average age of our employees is 26 years old. These people change the world and dominate the computer. I don't like computers to dominate people. Maybe in five hundred or six hundred years, the machine will kill humans. Our duty is to let man dominate the machine.


    Charlie Ross: This is a rapidly changing world. What changes have made you worried and what are you feeling gratified?


    Ma Yun: I am worried about greed and money worship. One of the causes of the financial crisis is greed. The country is thinking of GDP. The company wants to earn money, make profits and go public. We came to this world to experience life, not just what we just talked about. And I feel gratified that the young generation after 80 and after 90 will regain their values in the crisis.


    Charlie Ross: do you really think that the young generation after 80 and after 90 will regain their values in the crisis?


    Ma Yun: let me give you an example. My grandfather would say this when he blamed my father, and my father would also say what my grandfather said when he blamed me. But my father is better than my grandfather, and I will do better than my father. I believe my child will do better than me. This is the reason for this problem.


    Charlie Ross: what makes you work so hard? Is it just because of customers?


    Ma Yun: first of all, customers. Besides, a company wants to be bigger and stronger. You have to think about what social problems my company can solve. The key is not to seize opportunities, but to solve social problems. The Alibaba is developing very fast, and the chance of missing a company is very small.


    Charlie Ross: you once said that if Alibaba can't become a company like Microsoft and WAL-MART, you will regret it for life. How should we understand this sentence?


    Ma Yun: Yes, and I think we should go beyond Microsoft and WAL-MART because our mission is better than that of the previous generation. WAL-MART has created an excellent business model to promote the emergence of B2C mode. But Taobao and Alibaba created the C2B mode. In order to satisfy consumers, all enterprises changed their business models. So I think this century will bring opportunities for young people to change the world. Our predecessors have invested enormous manpower and material resources in education, and now is the time to score.


    Charlie Ross: not long ago, Gates and Buffett came to China to encourage rich people like you to do charity work. What do you think of this?


    Ma Yun: my view is, first of all, I never thought that my wealth belonged only to my individual, and it belonged to the whole society. When you have millions of dollars, you are a millionaire; when you have tens of millions of dollars, these are capital; and when you have hundreds of millions of yuan of wealth, it becomes a social resource. The money is only handed over to you by the community to manage and manage, and I feel that I can't spend all that money at all.
