Bangladesh Leather Industry Urges The Government To Cancel Import Tariffs On Raw Hide

Although the commercial banks and government of Bangladesh have provided financial support, the industry is still very poor this year.

Therefore, local shoe factories will be forced to import raw cowhide from India, the United States, Brazil and Russia.

The price of raw cattle produced locally will increase by more than 80%, while the price of imported leather will only increase by 60%.

Bangladesh raw cattle leather purchases decreased by 15% over the previous year.

The main reason is that typhoons have affected livestock slaughtering.

In normal years, the number of raw cowhide bought was 180-200 000, and the sheepskin purchase amount was 350-400 000. The raw cowhide was reduced by 200 thousand this year, and the goat skin was reduced by 500 thousand pieces.

Tanning plants can only buy 200 million square feet of raw cowhide.

At present, manufacturers have to increase the price of raw cowhide and wet blue by 10%.

In view of the current situation, leather enterprises urge the government to cancel import tariffs on raw cowhide, especially raw cattle from India.

Only in this way can they help Bangladesh's leather industry maintain its competitiveness in the international market, they said.
