Interview With Designer Michael Bastian
As one of the classic brands in the United States,
GANT
In 1960s, it became the two largest clothing manufacturer in the United States with Brooks Brothers, and was highly sought after by Ivy League students.
In recent years, with the young customers' interest in college style, GANT has also been endowed with new vitality and comeback. All of this is due to the brand designer Michael Bastian.
The designer, who once claimed to be unable to afford his designer clothes, started working with GANT in 2009 and received great acclaim.
Michael Bastian
He is good at keeping himself on the basis of keeping the classic outline of clothes and integrating his unique insights from his travels.
The inspiration of GANT 2013 spring and summer series comes from the inspiration of "exploration and discovery" brought by the Galapagos archipelago in tourist resorts, and still takes the style of academy as the main axis, including twill cotton shorts, lapel cardigans and windshield jackets, etc. the material is made of high performance science and technology fabrics, even in a tropical unstable climate.
In the exclusive preview of the GANT by Michael Bastian 2013 spring summer series we brought to you, the designer also talked about the idea of creation, the connection with the fabric of science and technology, and the matching tips for every young person.
It's convenient for us to talk about your role in GANT and with this.
brand
Is there any relationship between them?
Since 2009, I have been involved in the design of GANT by Michael Bastian series.
For those readers who are not familiar with GANT, can you describe the history of the brand and the relationship between the branch you are responsible for and the GANT and GANT Rugger?
No problem.
GANT was founded in 1949 in New Haven, Connecticut, when it was a shirt maker. So in the years, GANT was one of the brands that could well represent the history of American fashion.
Now it already has three branches: GANT is built for everyone and has classic design; GANT Rugger is responsible for my friend Christopher Bastin, mainly in modern fashion design, and GANT by Michael Bastian, which is very important to me.
What is the inspiration of the Galapagos Islands for the 2013 spring summer series?
The spirit of exploration and discovery is far more inspiring than the local animals.
I think the world is getting smaller and smaller, and many things are very similar. So when I came to this place, I found that there was still much to explore.
The new series brings hi-tech fabrics into the tropical design atmosphere. How much do you think high-tech fabrics occupy in the wardrobe? And have you ever introduced such fabrics into a series of designs in the past?
The reason for using this type of fabric is that I think it's cool to mix it with traditional fabrics and provide enough protection in such a harsh environment of the Galapagos Islands.
I used to use this kind of fabric in my past series, either as a sports element or as I just mentioned.
Turning the neoprene into a luxurious and comfortable fabric is indeed a challenge.
Where do you see the value of hi-tech fabrics and how to make use of them?
All these are related to the functional properties of fabrics.
They can provide warmth for you, cool down, block ultraviolet rays, and also prevent water from being damaged. At the same time, they are lightweight and easy to handle.
In the 2013 spring and summer series, which single item do you most like?
I like the short Tee with big blue feet best. He is very realistic, and even you may think he is questioning something.
What do you think about the printing of tropical style (such as Hawaii) on men's print design?
We used this element in the spring and summer series just now. It's very sad and interesting, but I think fashion trends are changing all the time. Maybe what we should do now is to return to rustic simplicity.
I like printing very much, but I don't think it should be used too much.
When you create, will you first form a general structure in your mind?
Every quarter is different, mood, place, song or movie, these can give me inspiration, so my design is the response to the present.
What do you think of men's clothing now? What changes do you think will happen in the next few seasons?
Now, we see that young people are very willing to spread their ideas and are very keen on dressing up. I think this situation will continue.
They may never be forced to wear Western clothes, but when they really wear them one day, they will feel boundless joy.
I am very glad to see youthful and energetic.
What do you usually wear on a regular basis?
Just like today, my own shorts are paired with an old Oxford wrinkle shirt, plus a pair of Adidas sneakers from 14 street.
What is the secret of a match that every man should follow?
A nice sunglasses can easily change the shape and make you feel cool at any time.
