A new study by the World Wide Fund for nature (WWF) points out that 80% of the total British imports face at least moderate water risks and 40% from "hot spots" with severe water shortages or serious pollution.
The report points out that enterprises in China face high water risks both in terms of reputation and regulation.
There are two reasons for this situation: first, China has formulated a number of new laws aimed at fundamentally governing the water supply problem in China, strengthening the supervision of water consumption at home and abroad, and the lack of coordinated comprehensive planning in various basins.
Although WWF also pointed out that there are pollution and waste problems in many industries such as beverages, food and medicine in the process of using water, it criticized the textile industry in name, especially the risk.
China, like India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, is Britain's main supplier of clothing.
According to the report, clothing companies in Britain rely heavily on garments from the coastal areas of Shandong province and the Yangtze River Valley. These two are China's clothing production centers, but are facing increasingly severe water shortages and pollution challenges. The Yellow River is also a major producer of clothing.
Toxic pollution caused by the top apparel brand supply chain is well documented.
Driven by China's NGO campaign, brands like H&M and Gap have cleaned out those heavily polluted suppliers, but luxury brands such as Dolce&Gabbana still go their own way.
Since 2012, WWF has been working in the Taihu River Basin of China to work together with industry and non-governmental organizations to improve the water quality of a local industrial park.
According to the WWF staff who wrote the report, the Jiangsu provincial government has now agreed to expand the scope of the work.
The report said that China's new water resources regulations are more stringent, which should attract the attention of enterprises and re examine their supply chain carefully.
In April, the government issued the anticipated "water ten" to strongly control water pollution.
It also criticized the textile industry, printing, pulp and paper industry.
In accordance with the revised environmental law, the sewage treatment standard of the factory will be stricter than that of the sewage treatment fee to be raised. Otherwise, it will face a higher fine.
Polluters may be sentenced, and small factories with profit margins may be forced to shut down or merge.
Experts point out that the plan is "unexpected and severe" and may change China's economy and realize the long-term "ecological civilization" pursued by China.
Whether the relevant departments can implement the new regulation is another question.
