    Moderator: Hello, everyone! Welcome to our meeting. It is my great honor to introduce to you Ma Yun, chairman of the board of directors of Alibaba group.

    Mr. Ma Yun founded his Alibaba with his 18 colleagues in Hangzhou in 1999. He is the first person to understand the potential of the Internet in China, especially through the Internet to help small companies grow in the global market.

    It is already the largest electricity supplier in the world. More than a billion consumers buy goods. Many businesses sell goods and create more than 3 million jobs directly or indirectly. But Ma said his company has just started. He wants to create 100 million jobs and reach about 2000000000 consumers.

    He is now a member of the Council of the global economic forum and a member of the Outstanding Youth Council. It is a great honor for you to take the time to meet with the young people today. Please follow me to welcome Mr. Ma Yun.

    These outstanding young people all over the world would like to ask you questions, but let me ask you a few questions first.

      

    Last year, you talked about paying attention to 30 year old young people, and paying close attention to companies with fewer than 30 employees. I was just 30 years old last year, so I am very glad to hear that.

    For many of you here, they may be one of two of your 30 requirements. What do you think is the most anticipated and feared thing in the next 30 years?

    Ma Yun: our generation is very lucky. Because the world has entered a period of great technological pformation, we have read many books. Over 200 years ago, there were many great people when the first industrial revolution happened. More than 100 years ago, electricity came into being, and many great men were created. Now, a new round of technological development will create many successful people and create some very interesting career choices.

    But frankly speaking, every technological innovation will bring about some social problems.

    I think the first industrial revolution brought the first World War. The second industrial revolution brought World War II. Now we are in the third industrial revolution. What will happen?

    Many people are worried about AI.

    Robot

    Technology, worry about computer data and privacy security, but whether you worry or not, it will come, so the key is to change yourself.

    I think there will be great changes in the world in the next 30 years. If there are third world wars, then the world war is a war against disease, environmental pollution and poverty, rather than a war between people.

    But if we can not see this clearly, we can not solve these problems without technology, and we can not unite in alliance.

    Because every technological revolution will make the world unbalanced. The world imbalance means that the number of people who ranked first is second, and the number of people who originally ranked third has become second, so many people will feel uncomfortable.

    If you are 20 years old and -30 years old, you should join a good company to learn how to do things with a good boss.

    When you are 30 years old and -40 years old, if you want to do something by yourself, do it, because you are still young, even if you fail, it doesn't matter.

    But if you are 40 years old and -50 years old, I think you should do something good at it, instead of doing something new that you think is very interesting to try, otherwise it is very dangerous.

    When you are 50 years old and -60 years old, you should focus on training young people. When you are more than 60, you'd better share your family with your grandchildren.

    Over the next 30 years, we will face many challenges. Many things will happen. You have to think about it. If you want to succeed tomorrow, it is impossible, but it is possible for you to succeed after a year.

    If you want to win in 10 years, you will have an opportunity.

    Moderator: let's talk about a topic that we can't ignore. 1/3 executives in the Alibaba group are women. But in other parts of the world, this is not the case. Some female friends tell me that they are tired of listening to projects that are empowering women. And in 2017, we heard a lot of news about sexual harassment and gender discrimination. How do you think we can talk about it and actually make changes in women's empowerment?

    Ma Yun: this topic is very interesting. A few years ago, a reporter came to our company. When he left, he asked me a question. Why do you have so many women in your company? I didn't realize this problem at that time.

    I asked him, "how many problems do women have?" today, nearly 49% of our employees are women. This is a very high proportion for a high-tech company, but we do not mean to hire women. Of course, women can help us grow.

    It is the service industry. In order to serve others better, you need a heart of service. We find that women do better in this respect than men.

    The second reason is that people in the last century are more muscular than men. This century is no more than muscle, but rather wisdom.

    I think that if a person wants to succeed, he should have a higher EQ. If he doesn't want to fail quickly, he must have high intelligence quotient, but if you want to be respected, you should have a higher love business, that is, the ability to love others. These three businesses should be put together.

    Many young people have very high IQ, but EQ is very low, almost no love business, but women are relatively balanced between these three quotient values. If you want the company to be successful, operate in a smart way and care for others, women are very good choices.

    In our company, women are very concerned, far better than men, especially in e-commerce shopping sites.

    We find that women can buy a lot of things, but women are buying things for their husbands, children and parents, while men only buy things for themselves, which shows the difference between women and men.

    There are 49% women in our company, and nearly 70% of them are women. We do not think this is a problem. Women can say that they sacrifice a lot of dedication. When they love this thing and believe in it, they will stick to it. I think one of the secrets of Alibaba's success or the secret of Alibaba's success over the past decade or so is that we have many female colleagues.

    On the other hand, we are very proud of this. I find that at least half of the team is women, and women are very good co-workers.

    If there are too many men now, should we intentionally hire some women?

    Host: what do you suggest? What if a company has more men and less representation in women?

    Ma Yun: if you do this, if the women are not enough, you can't get the goal you want to achieve. I think if a company is male, I tell you that the company will not succeed. It's like if you do not let the water in the pot boil, it will become too hard and hard things will break easily.

    Our values are customer first, employee second and shareholder third. Wall Street doesn't like me very much, but that's the case. If you like our company, invest in us. If you don't like our company, sell our stock. Anyway, we believe that employees are the first, customers second, and shareholders third.

    Many people would say that men do things better, but we believe that even if men are better, we still need female employees. Female employees will be more willing to recruit new employees. I do not know how many high-tech companies in the world can have 49% of their colleagues are women. We feel proud of that.

    Moderator: I think you should be proud of it, and it is also a very powerful signal, especially for those companies that can not have women's representation.

    This morning's plenary session talked about the topic of e-commerce. Especially for small companies, how can they benefit from globalization? Globalization is once again being questioned. People say that globalization can bring benefits and so on. What do you want to say? What information do you have to tell them about globalization?

    Ma Yun: I think globalization is inevitable. No one can stop globalization. No one can stop trade. If trade stops, war will break out. Trade is the way to solve the war, and it is not the cause of war.

    I think globalization has done a very good job in the past 30 years. Globalization has brought rich life to many countries. Of course, it has also caused many problems. For example, young people feel that opportunities are not enough, small companies have no opportunities, and developing countries are ignored, but this is only 30 years ago. Globalization is still a small baby.

    Of course we need to improve the process. If we don't want to improve him, you will kill him.

    Obviously, most of the time you smother a thing is much easier than improving it. I think our generation is going to do this. We have better technology today and better understanding of globalization. This is the responsibility and opportunity of our generation. We should catch up with globalization.

    How can we stop globalization?

    AI is coming. Robots are coming. My grandfather works 16 hours a day. Now we only work 8 hours a day. We feel very tired and busy. Our children may only work 3 or 4 hours a day and only work three days a week. I believe they will say we are all busy.

    When you only work three hours a day, and only work 3 or 4 days a week, what can you do and what you have to do in the rest of the day? You can't stay at home.

    30 years ago, our entire career could be estimated to go to 20 or 30 cities. In 30 years, you might be able to go to 300 cities in a lifetime, because people's lifestyle has become more mobile.

    Global trade should be simpler, more modern and inclusive, so that everyone can have opportunities. I want to say that I feel sorry for WTO.

    They have done very well in the past 20 years, but when you put more than 200 government ministers in a conference room, how could these more than 200 people reach a consensus on one thing? I don't like your country. I don't care how good your suggestion is, I will say no.

    But businessmen are different. Even if you put 200 businessmen in a conference room, we can certainly agree on certain things. This is what I believe. This is that the next wave of globalization should be inclusive. It should create opportunities for young people and let them better participate in the process of globalization.

    The first globalization in human history was controlled by some kings. The past 30 years of globalization were controlled by more than 60 big companies.

    If you are not in those very powerful countries, there is no chance, but in the next 30 years, I bet that we will have 6 million or 60 million of the companies involved in globalization, and I am sure we will turn it into reality.

    If people use mobile phones 30 years later, they can achieve global purchases. For example, if you want to buy something in Kenya, you can click on it. If you want to buy something from Norway, you can click on the global purchase and global sales. Now there are global payments, global delivery and global travel. You only need cell phones, or even do not need passports. This will happen ten years later. This is a message. Please let us seize the opportunity.

    If we seize and embrace opportunities, you will be the next Alibaba.

    A man like me was born in a very poor family and had no good education. For whatever reason, he failed in the exam. At that time, I had no money, no technology, no background, no rich uncle, but I told the young people that I would compete with you ten years later. I believe that ten years later, this will happen and work in that direction.

    What I want to tell you is that this is both a challenge and an opportunity.

    The most difficult thing in the world today is convincing those successful people to convince them that if we say this is an opportunity, they will say, no, no, no, no, I have been doing this for 30 years.

    But people like us are looking for opportunities and looking for opportunities for survival, so we need to be creative, so that's what I want to say.

    Host: let's talk about how the young people should view the government. If there are 6 million, 1600 or 60 million companies to participate in globalization, will consumption make them happier and happier?

    Ma Yun: we must be unhappy without spending. But in fact, people like me, people say Ma Yun, you are very rich, you can spend money, but I know that this money does not belong to me.

    I have 1 million or 2 million of my money, but 20 million of us have some problems. I think the dollar is going to depreciate, how about the pound and the stock market, but if you have 1 billion dollars, this is the responsibility, because the society trusts you, let you manage the money, think you will manage better, if you do not manage well, you will have problems, I always think so.

    How can a person have 20 million or 2 billion dollars so much money? No matter how hard you work, you shouldn't have so much money. People put money here to trust you, so we should spend more money than the government to spend money on the right place.

    For example, the service industry, artificial intelligence and robots will replace many jobs, but we will create more jobs in the service industry. The service industry is launched around consumption, so the service industry has great opportunities, but you must have something unique.

    Host: we can start asking questions.

    Audience: Hello, I am a distinguished young community member from Chicago.

    Can you tell us what is changing in the fragmented world we live in?

    Ma Yun: This is about friendship. This is not to help others, but to help myself. I have a heated argument with my colleagues. A few years ago, there was a big earthquake in China, and a serious earthquake happened in Japan. I can not remember how much we donated, but some people said why it was so small. I think no matter how much money you donate, 2 million or 20 million, this money is a drop in the bucket compared to the scale of need. Your donation is actually changing itself, you change, the world changes, you have to change yourself first.

    The next point is that charity has to act and awaken people's conscience.

    In my opinion, my idea of globalisation was developed in this area. When I was nominated as the global youth leader in 2011, I had no idea what Davos was and what was the world's outstanding youth. But when I came to the conference and learned about global citizenship and globalization, I gradually grew up, which was a growth for me and changed me.

    In my opinion, it is good for me to spend time with you young people. I can tell you that this is also a kind of charity, not necessarily money.

    Charity can't change the world, but if you have a charitable heart, you can do a lot of things.

    So I think it is a pity that many people have a commercial heart, but in fact we should have a charitable heart, but we must possess business skills.

    I don't like many people very much. In the opposite direction, they want to make money, but speaking like a philanthropist, and many people want to do charity, it turns out that they wasted a lot of money.

    So if you and your team want to work together for life, you have to plant a seed that cares about the world and care for others. From the first day you join the company, you will plant such seeds instead of producing fake and shoddy products and polluting products, so the idea of charity should be integrated into your business model.

    Audience: I would like to ask your opinion on gender equality. What should women pay more attention to in order to achieve your success?

    Ma Yun: Frankly speaking, I never thought that there would be today. I recall that every elderly person I met met with a lot of help, and many people and many companies refused me. Almost more than 30 companies, you want 24 people to apply for KFC's work, 23 of them were admitted, only I didn't get accepted, like my cousin and I went to a four star hotel to apply for a job. After several hours, he was accepted, but I didn't, so I looked at you, so I said you were hopeless.

    But I know, this is my cost. I had no chance a few years ago, but I had the chance. I became a teacher later. After I graduated from University, I worked as a teacher for 6 years in a university. In fifth years, I was rated as the best teacher by students.

    So I thought, everything I taught to my students was learned from books. If I spent 10 years walking out of school, I had some experience, whether it was success or failure. I came back to be a teacher. I first founded Alibaba as the idea. I never thought I would be rich. I never thought we would succeed, nor did we expect that we would last for 18 years, but we did it.

    The only thing we should do today is to share our experience, especially to share the mistakes we made.

    My idea is, please bear in mind that if you want to succeed, you should learn from others' mistakes and learn from them without listening to those successful stories, because there are many reasons behind success.

    I remember the first time Harvard Business School came to me in 2000, and said, "we want to write a case of yours. They wrote a report in a week. I saw it was not me. They said it was you, let us sign it, then took the case away, and began teaching in many universities.

    In the next 5 years, they asked me to give a speech. At that time, there were two competitors. After the speech, they said that after 5 years, the Alibaba would go bankrupt. The other two companies would be successful. After 5 years, our competitors all went bankrupt, and we are still there. How do you define this successful story?

    So learn from your mistakes, no matter how smart you are, you will make mistakes. You learn from your mistakes not because you can avoid mistakes, but when these mistakes come, you know how to deal with them and how to deal with them.

    If I had time, I would write "Alibaba's one thousand and one mistakes". This is the most valuable experience in my life. My wealth is not how much I have achieved, but how much pain and mistakes we have.

    If you think about it now, it's very good, so you asked me, I didn't think I would succeed.

      


    Audience: Hello, I am from Shanghai.

    I noticed that you just spent 100 billion yuan to carry out basic scientific research. I want to ask what is this?

    Ma Yun: we invest 100 billion yuan to do high-tech research. I am sure I hope to get profits from technology, so I must invest in science and technology. But I don't like the argument of many people. Artificial intelligence and big data threaten people. I think AI should support human beings. Technology should make us more capable, and not make people hesitate.

    When the steam engine arrived, many people hated it when the car arrived. Today we think the car is very good, but when the car was just designed, people were very sick of cars, especially the coachman, who destroyed all the cars that could be seen.

    So I want to say that people like us, when we have money, when there are resources, there are so many excellent young people, we should spend more money on technology, giving people more ability to make life better, which is what we want to invest.

    I think no matter how good AI is, if human beings and machines compete for knowledge, human beings will have no chance, because computers will always be smarter than us.

    When we have a car, we think that people can't run fast. When we have a plane, we realize that people can't fly. So with computers, computers will never forget anything, computers won't be angry, computers are very calm and can be calculated faster, but electric brain is not as smart as human beings.

    What is the difference between intelligence and intelligence?

    In my opinion, a wise man sees what others can't see. A wise man sees what he pretends not to see, a wise man knows what he wants, and a wise man knows what he wants.

    A wise man knows what you want only if you know I don't want it. You only know what you don't want to know, and that's what we want. This is our research on investment. It's not for Alibaba. It's better to support people. It's open to the world, so it's not just supporting our company's development.

    Audience: I am one of the outstanding youth in the world. What do you think of leadership? Do you think leadership comes from your heart, leadership is something that needs sober mind to do, or does leadership need emotional drive and a calm mind?

    Ma Yun: This is a good question. I have been thinking about it.

    First of all, it is natural intuition. You have to feel something different. Second, you need to be trained. Those difficult experiences and difficult processes can be good training materials for you.

    I find that good leaders are very positive. They do not complain about others. They look at things in different ways.

    In my company, I was unpopular at the very beginning, because I always wanted to work 5 years later, 10 years later, and worked together for 3 to 5 years, my colleagues found that you were right.

    As a CEO, my job is to say unhappy things when everyone is happy. When everyone is unhappy, I want to say something that makes people happy. So leadership is to be trained, and my leadership skills are promoted in Davos.

    Do you know Alipay? How many people know Alipay?

    Alipay's decision was made in Davos. I was also thinking about Alipay, but at that time I did not dare to launch. If I had no license, I would have to go to jail at that time.

    At that time, I asked the bank, can you help the electricity supplier pfer? Then the bank said, we do not accept it, so if there is no Alipay, it is difficult for the electricity supplier to enlarge the scale.

    In 2004, I heard a leader's speech in Davos.

    He said leadership is a responsibility, something you believe, but others do not believe it, but if you think this is very important, you have to pay for it at all costs.

    This changed my mind, I immediately called the team, I said we launched Alipay, launched in a month, if someone is going to jail, let me do it, if I go to jail, you continue to do my work, if you go to jail, our company's third chairs will continue to do this work, this is 2004, Alipay's decision was made in Davos, now Alipay not only launched, and the scale is very large, more than 800 million people all use Alipay, this is leadership.

      

    Audience: I'm from Costa Rica. How do you take care of yourself and how do you care about your company? For example, can there be many things that you can't sleep at some time?

    Ma Yun: I am very lucky, because there are 18 co founders besides me. Most of them are my students. In my family, I told them my dream. I remember the first day when the Alibaba was launched, I said I would take all the pictures. Every important meeting I would shoot, I said the aim of this practice is that if we fail, let's give the video to those who study why we failed. If we succeed, let's give the video to those who study our success.

    In the first video, I talked for two hours, and everyone looked at me, saying that this is what you want to do, and I say yes, I want to do this.

    At first, I didn't understand technology or management, but you didn't need to know everything. What you need to do is to find people who are smarter than you.

    My principle is to find accountants to be smarter than I am. Computer scientists and technicians are better at finding computers than I am. So all these years I have been working with people smarter than I am. When you find so many smart people, my job is to make sure that these smart people can work together harmoniously.

    If these smart people can work together, it will be easy.

    Stupid people can work very well together. Smart people are usually hard to work together.

    But stupid people work together, he doesn't believe in this vision, but smart people believe that vision is hard to work together, so the point is, on the one hand, to find smart people, and to ensure that they can work very well, so culture is very important.

    On the one hand, you need to have a long-term vision. On the other hand, you should also pay attention to today's survival, because if you can't survive today, you will disappear, so the best way to promote your company is not yourself, but your product.

    The best product in your company is actually the staff, through the staff to publicize the company.

    In the early days, I was the first 2000 employees of the Alibaba. I used to spend one or two hours talking with them. I told them that I could not guarantee that you would be very rich. I couldn't guarantee that you would be promoted. I assure you that you would be very miserable. I assure you that your days will be miserable. So it is the ugly words in front of me, when I joined the company, I made clear all the bad things.

    If you just start to promise them, please mislead people. I can't promise myself how to assure them. Although I know this is the future, I'm not sure that we can go to this future.

    If we can't work well together, our work will definitely be impossible.

    Audience: I am also one of the outstanding youth in the world. How do you feel that experience has affected your business role as a teacher?

    Ma Yun: I can tell you something. I never thought that I could become a CEO. I never dared to think that I should become a good CEO. This is what I learned from the process of practice. As a teacher, teachers always want to make students learn better. I want to make this student a mayor, a scientist and a banker, which are all teachers' wishes.

    If you do not have such a kind of thinking, then your teacher will not be good enough. Good teachers always hope that the blue is better than the blue. You do not want your students to go bankrupt or jail, this student is guilty, certainly not.

    As a CEO, I also train myself. I hope that if my employees can do better, everything that companies do is to ensure that our environment is good and positive. This is the teacher's thinking. Teachers do not mean that I know more than you, I know more than you, not that teachers learn from others, learn from them, and learn from others forever, and share their thoughts with others forever.

    By the way, education is now facing great challenges. If we do not change the way of teaching, we will have big problems in 30 years.

    Because what we teach our children is knowledge based content over the past 200 years, and we can not compete with our machines, because this past based content is no way to teach future competition. We have to teach children in a completely new way. After 20 years, our children will have better opportunities.

    Moderator: this question is very difficult to answer. What are the key skills you are talking about? For example, not only pure knowledge, but also what do you need to know?

    Ma Yun: a concept of value is very important. Belief, independent thinking, teamwork, caring for others are all soft parts. This is probably not taught by knowledge teaching, but I think we should let children participate more in sports, music, painting and art, and make sure that everything we teach is different from what is taught to the machine.

    Audience: about education and the fourth industrial revolution, many people have lost their job opportunities or their skills are not enough. How do your employees upgrade their skills? How do they know what the future technology is?

    Ma Yun: it's very fortunate that I don't have to do so much in my own company, because we are fighting for the future every day. We know that if you don't work hard, all these companies like Facebook, Google and Amazon will do better than us. That's why this is a global competition, but we know that this is not just competition in science and technology.

    Among our 18 founders, there are only 2-3 engineers. But today, there are thousands of engineers in our company. We now have 25000 engineers. They are all smart and much more than ever. I always make sure that they have a charitable heart. Because we know the technology, if they do not have a good heart, we will become a disaster in the world.

    Google, Facebook, Amazon and Alibaba, our companies are the luckiest companies of the century. If we are lucky, we have a responsibility. We should have a sense of integrity and do good deeds.

    But the other point I want to say is to make sure that everything you do is geared towards the future.

    You know, "singles day", which was founded by our Alibaba. Last year, our sales volume was $25 billion a day. In the first minute, 70 million to 80 million people went shopping on mobile phones, so you have to make sure your system is good enough.

    We have to deal with 275 thousand pactions per second. Can you imagine that?

    270 thousand pactions per second, if you do not have such a computing power, the whole system will crash because there are tens of thousands of people waiting to pay.

    We may have 100 million deliveries every day, and we believe that 5 years later, the world will be able to deliver 1 billion parcels and express deliveries every day.

    So "singles day" is to test this technology, so that this technology is comprehensive and inclusive, so ensure that the market to promote, rather than by the boss to promote.

    Audience: I am from Mexico. We like you very much. About 30 years ago and 30 years later, and I want to ask the question is that Mr. Schwab said a few days ago that we will become the first generation of people to solve climate change and the last generation can do something, so how can people have such developmental thinking?

    Ma Yun: first of all, I want to say that every environmental disaster is a threat to the core of mankind, because I need too much, and we destroy a lot of things.

    In the past 200 years, because of technological development or training based on knowledge, we have always wanted more things. When we go to the moon and Mars, we always look out. Human beings never look at the heart. If we do not examine our hearts, we will never have wisdom and wisdom. If you do not have wisdom, you will not know what you do not want.

    Now that human beings get far more than they deserve, environmental pollution is caused by human greed. People become greedy and arrogant. So big data and data technology are trying to understand people's heart, that is, what human behavior is. Believe me, the machine will know you better than yourself.

    Have you seen some movies, some gamblers, they are greedy, if you get the number plate, his eyes will blink, we can not see, but the machine can read these information, the machine knows you better.

    So what I want to say is that in the age of data, people in the next one hundred years should have more introspection. We will see that they are ugly. If you look out, you will see other people's beauty and ugliness. This is Chinese traditional philosophy. Chinese are very convinced of introspection, if you can do it, it is very good.

    So in terms of the environment, you are right. If you don't take action, all the money you earn will go to the hospital, so our children and grandchildren will be in big trouble. So let's turn it around. First we will heal our hearts, heal our knowledge, and revise our beliefs. We have religion and values. That's what I care about. I think young people should have values and vision. If you have faith in your heart, you will be different. This is the focus of education in the next 30 years.

    Audience: I'm from Mauritius. When you talk about the culture of the workplace, I want to hear one or two examples. How do you motivate your employees? The question you want to ask is, how long do you sleep? I always hear different versions of the problem.

    Ma Yun: how can you hear different editions?

    Audience: some people say that excellent CEO only sleeps 4 hours a day. Some people say that you need 8 hours to stay healthy, so you always hear different answers, and want to know what your secret is.

    Ma Yun: how do I motivate employees? You have to find someone who can motivate yourself. If the person is negative, you can't encourage him, so people who are positive and positive can work together.

    We are now 65 thousand employees, you can not inspire everyone, but at least these people believe me, my management, I come down a few leaders, they are very positive, they must be able to inspire others, because I can not inspire everyone, but also to ensure that our culture is correct.

    I think if I talk to my vice president every time I can motivate him, it's very painful.

    He must be able to know how to motivate people around him. If he fails to do that, he should not be vice president. He may be a good engineer, but not necessarily a good leader.
