British Clothing Exporters Are Hit By An Additional 25% Tariff In The US.
Since October 18th (Friday), British made Cashmere sweater, hooded anorak and swimsuit products will be exported to the United States, which will be hit by an additional 25% tariff. This is due to the extension of improper subsidy disputes between the US and the European Union for civil aviation machinery manufacturers.
At the beginning of this (10) month, the US agreed with WTO to impose tariffs of 10% to 25% on imported goods (including garments) worth $7 billion 500 million to the EU. Most tariffs apply to importing countries such as France, Germany, Spain and the United Kingdom that involve illegal subsidies.
The move stems from the EU's escalating trade disputes with the United States by illegally subsidized Airbus. The World Trade Organization (WTO) has found that this has seriously damaged the interests of the United States. The complete list of the affected products was published in the federal Gazette on October 18th (Friday), including sweaters, pullovers, sportswear and similar knitted, crochet or wool or cotton articles, cold protective jackets for women's hats and cold caps for girls with caps, swimsuits and suits for men's or boys' wool or man-made fibres.
The terms covered by the additional tariff will vary from country to region - but Britain is the only country to impose additional tariffs on textiles.
Specifically, the British made Cashmere jumper sweater, hat cold resistant jacket (anorak) and swimsuit will be subject to 25% additional tariffs on exports to the US market. This is an additional duty which is added to the normal tariff.
The British Ministry of international trade said that the British government made it clear that resorting to customs duties was not in line with the interests of the United Kingdom, the European Union or the United States.
We are working closely with the United States, the European Union and European partners to resolve disputes between vacant and Boeing two companies through negotiation. We also seek confirmation from WTO that Britain fully complies with and supports WTO's decision on air Pakistan, but Britain should not be subject to tariff imposed sanctions.
Adam Mansell, executive director of the British fashion and textile network UKFT, called for the two sides to resolve the dispute as soon as possible: "in view of the great uncertainty of the UK's impact on Europe, the main non EU market will impose such a high tariff on products not related to the aircraft dispute, which will have devastating consequences. Some of our major manufacturers will be hit by punitive tariffs, which will undoubtedly affect employment and investment in the industry.
Simon Cotton, executive director of Johstons of Elgin, the largest Cashmere knitwear manufacturer in Britain, said tariffs would have a major impact on the knitwear industry in the UK.
"The United States is next to Europe and Japan, our third largest export market. This will have a major impact on our knitwear business and the entire British knitting industry. American consumers are very fond of the best quality knitwear in the UK. We will urge all parties to think about the British manufacturers and American consumers and reach a prompt agreement. "
